Kuta / Seminyak area quiet right now

offerings100505.jpgThe Kuta area is quiet right now, not totally dead, but quiet. The major news companies will tell you its all due to the latest bombing in Kuta and Jimbaran and that everyone has left in a hurry. Here's the deal. Yes people have left, not in a panic charge, but by natural erosion, their holiday is over and they left. There are 2 other big reasons Kuta is quiet. October 5th is the first day of Ramadan and many people from Java go home. Here in Bali it is also Galungan, the most important time of the year for Balinese and they also go home for 2-3days. Places like Cafe Moka close and this is normal.

penjor100505.jpgTourists to Bali will notice the penjors, the tall bamboo poles dangling and decorated basket. Every house in Bali and every street or gang will be lined with penjors, its really a magnificent sights to see when driving down a main road. The most important time of year for Balinese, they believe their ancestors return to Earth for a period of 10 and must be respected. Galungan is the time when many pigs on the island see their last days, as babi guling (suckling pig) , the Balinese favourite dish, is prepared all over the island. Lets hope Ramadan makes the nutcases a bit more introspective, or at least to tired to get up to any mischief.

In relation to the media frenzie over the bombings in Bali. It would appear they are having a ‘Mark Latham’ moment when it comes to seperating fact from rumor. The media it appears, gets drunk on every rumor, every piece of gossip. This is exactly aiding the terrorist, they are in fact the right arm of terrorist when they behave in such an appaling, unfactual, exagerated and sloppy manor.
What the terrorists can not achieve the western media will do everything in its power to achieve for them. Why? Because alarming people is easier to sell!

are you intellectually challenged or something Bob?

The fact is there are terrorists out there and they have bombed Bali twice.

If the Aus govt doesn’t issue warnings and tourists are killed, the Aus govt gets slagged off for not telling Aussies of the risks in Bali. If, on the other hand, the Aus govt does issue warnings then it gets slagged off for “giving the terrorists what they want”.

the thing is…the govt releases warning to
1> cover its own arse..and
2> it the govts responsibility to issue these warnings

as johnny howard said…australia is a democracy…he hasnt got the right to say “no, you cant go to bali”

Anyone traveling to Bali is ignorant of recent history or completely has their head in the sand.

There are so many places on this earth to see. Why people would willingly choose to go to an area which is a prime target and is not secure at all is beyond me.

Some people just have a death wish.

Not everywhere on Earth can offer what Bali has to offer at such an affordable price. But risking you life to get a good exchange rate seems silly, but I do it anyways. I’ve been to Bali twice, once in May of 04 and last May as well. Great place, but too long of a flight and not worth the risks anymore.

Yeah,
Bali is not the best for those coming from the US.
What does that take? Like several filghts and like 24hrs+ to get to DPS.

Natt - Thats what I said and did after the first bombings. Tell me who wins when u get blown up?

Do the terrorists really win if we don’t go on holidays?
In mu opinion it makes jack difference.
They they did what they intended to…blow up holiday goers, specifically australians.

Yeah Bali has some very suttle differences in comparision to other asian destinations. For example, Thailand……

“same same but different”

There are plenty of alternatives to cheap holidays instead of going to bali.

Bottom like for me is:

If JI is outlawed and the indo govt. pulls it’s fingers out of their behinds. Gets rid of the corruption in the authorities. Then I will consider returning.

Hey I’d love to come back to Bali don’t get me wrong. But the risk factor and the odds are not worth betting my life on.

Yeah people say it can happen anywhere.
Sure agreed.
But at least I’m using my brain actually thinking, hey, “I have less odds of getting blown up by not going to where it’s happened heaps”

Yeah everyone lets not forget some embassys have been bombed, the numerous failed bomb attempts.

Jonas did it in once line:
“Great place, not worth the risks anymore”

SBY must be a hopeless idiot for refusing to ban JI. What other proofs does he need? 3rd Bali Bombing? I can’t help but shake my head in disbelief.

There will be more bombings as long as indonesia refuses to rein in on JI.

The fundamentalists are a problem and have to be dealt with no doubt. The other side of the coin is that when countries like Britain invade Iraq and go around threatening Iran, meanwhile mistreating Muslim detainees, many Muslims around the world feel like they are being threatened.

When people use the words ‘agressive’ ‘dangerous’ ‘fanatical’ etc. you could point them at either side of the war on terror, depending on your point of view. Isrealis talk about terrorists, but their military terrorizes people. This whole subject is a can of worms and until governments have a dialogue with their own people and other countries we will get more of the same around the world.

Nick, the Indonesian Muslims were massacring Christians in Ambon long before Iraq. Wake up and stop trying to shift the blame. Wiping out Christian, Buddhist, Bahai, Hindu and Jewish communities is a Muslim tradition.

if ur not in Ambon that time dont try to make ur own judgment. we’re indonesian also have no clue what really happened in ambon at those time. no winner, all side is looser , whether they’re Moslem or Christian.

indonesian moslem never wipe out any other religion in indonesia. just some political bastard who like to exploit diversity in indonesia to become source of conflict.

the best way to slow down terrorists in bali is to have an only Balines police force. This could be part of a community policing initiave and not offend muslims.

I was planning on travelling to Bali sometime next year, but am a bit apprehensive because of the bombings. I’m really disappointed because Bali was an ideal location due to my budget but moreso for its beauty and reputation. Where would you recommend that I go (as a back up plan) if Bali becomes too dangerous? I’m looking for a location that will be as advantageous in respects to exchange rate… Thailand? Other Indonesian islands? India? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! ~suz

SuziQzi,

There are many places in Bali that are safe because they are far away from crowded tourist centers. you can go to Kintamani, ubud, lovina, padangbai. I would avoid Siminyak (sorry Nick), Kuta, Jimbaran, DenPasar, and any places you see a large congregation of tourists as specially westerners in one place.

India? they have a large muslims population, so I would be wary of them too. When your life is in danger, you can be forgiven for being discriminating a bit.

Don’t go to South Thailand coz it’s dangerous right now.

Suz….
I just returned from Bali today and had an absolutely wonderful time for a 1st visit. I didn’t go near Kuta, Jimbaran, or Seminyak so I can’t compare my actual visit to my original plans before the bombing. Instead, I stayed on Sanur beach, went to Ubud, river rafting, sunset at Tanah Lot, Bedugal, temples, rice terraces, Barong Dance, beach walking, massage, pool lounging, etc. Other people I know went to Kuta, Jimbaran, Poppies with no problems. Just depends on you ~ there’s plenty to do there either way. I was only there 4 1/2 days, which I found out was way, way too short time! Now I know what to do when I return!

Lily,

I am glad you had a good time while in Bali, and that you made it back safely.

Now that you have been there, how would you plan yout next trip? How long, where to go, what to do, etc etc? thanks in advance.

Hi Tom,
I’m hardly the expert based on my 4 1/2 days there but next time I’ll start with a few relax days with a pool near beach. Then, I want to stay in Ubud for a while…. I forgot to mention above Monkey Forest was cool for a quick stop in afternoon (but watch out for bug bites if late a’noon). The return to Ubud is just b/c I liked the art/hippie-like atmosphere. Would definitely check out kintamani or mountains, elephant cave, ulu watu, many others mentioned here in the blog! Really depends on your interests…..I might try 2 weeks myself. Of course, I would go to Kuta also - wish I’d gone this past week!

Hope you have a great time!
