Kuta Beach was windy and partially deserted today. Steeping across the street from McDonalds, I was careful not to get hit by a taxi or a stray motorbike. once on the beach I could tell it was high tide with the amount of surfers in the water. Kuta Beach has little spots where the waves break better and all the locals know them. One surfboard renter approached me and said “Hey mate you want go surfing?” “No” I said, “I’d drown today.” The wind spoiled the waves and made the ocean look like soup.
Beach vendors were wrapped up against the flying sand and board renters weren’t doing so hot. Another day another opportunity. Maybe tomorrow we’ll have sun and it will be good times again.

Riding home today after a couple of hours in Kuta, I swung by Kuta Beach. The weather today is gorgeous, blazing sunshine, not too much wind and a bit of swell, though nothing big. Tourists were out renting motorbikes, making calls home and enjoying the beach. Getting down to Kuta gives me a feel of the tourist scene, more so than sitting in my bedroom. At Internet Outpost I watched 2 Australian tourists navigate the process of renting a motorbike. They were unfamiliar with the casual way things work out here and wanted to know all the details. Here in Bali the renter doesn’t care what licence you have, or if you have a licence, for them its all about the money.
Only the cops care about the licence. These people today had an Aussie licence but no International Licence. They were able to rent a like but it meant their insurance would be void. By the way the insurance over here, if its does work, will only cover your car / bike in the case of an accident involving a person without insurance.

Kuta Beach, the most famous beach in Indonesia. Today Kuta Beach was fairly quiet due to the cloudy weather. Beach vendors know how it works, blue skies equals tourists, wind and rain equal empty beach. With my shades on the waves look almost psychedelic. My glasses are polarizing and the color I see is a dark vibrant green.
Pulling up to a stop next to the taxis, across from the McDonald’s, I saw the usual drivers lounging around and asking everyone walking by if they want a ride, a girl, or whatever. Today was slack for them. Beginning surfers however, or just just surfers new to Bali has an okay time this morning. Although cloudy, it was high tide and there was some surf. The wind was negligible, meaning it was possible to catch nice little waves. Plenty of Bali boys in the water, plus Japanese and the odd, wild man Aussie.
For newcomers to Bali, you can rent surfboards on the beach for maybe 40,000rp per hour. Always negotiate and wait till high tide (that means when the water is close to shore). During high tide the waves are more gentle and don’t close out so aggressively. Don’t worry, the Bali boys will try to rent you a board whatever the conditions. If you rent one of their repaired boards, take it out at high tide, get slammed and the thing snaps, they’ll want 2m rp for the thing. You are better off waiting till high tide renting from a reputable place like Palu on Poppies II.
