Kids and coconuts Pamesan Bali

A little further on still in the Pamesan area, I stopped to photo a lady sorting through a massive pile of coconut husks. Balinese people collect the husks, then leave them out to dry, much in the same way as a westerner would chop wood. When the husks are all brown they can be sold to warungs and satay vendors. The fibrous interior flames up quite well and the touch, 3 millimeter thick outer shell smolders, catching fire instantly when the satay man fans it.

My presence did not go unnoticed and a group of Balinese kids ran over shouting “Hallo Mister, foto, foto.” I obliged and they were happy to check themselves out, probably never having seen a digital camera before. Actually their parents encouraged them to come over. These kids will have access to things their parents never had and I’m sure life in a Balinese village is going through a lot of change, in regards to the young people.
