Kicking off the week at Global in Kerobokan Bali

Today was a somewhat overcast affair but pleasant temperatures. I spent the morning a Global Xtreme taking care of some typing etc. and trying out my new word that Barrie gave me, Trims.

This is a shortened version of terima kasih ( thank you ) and I’m trying to do an informal survey to see if the locals here will respond. I use terima kasih or makasi and people understand both of these.

I bumped into an Australian gentleman who moved here a year ago to retire. He built his house using local labor and has owned a building company before. Since then he’s completed projects for other foreignors and now has so much much work all he has time for is a cup of coffee and e-mail! Amazing how much trouble doing good work can get you into.

From Global I could see a giant kite being launched across the paddy fields. Yesterday I observed some guys carrying a 20 ft long kite made of bamboo poles across Jalan Legian. These things are all over and its pretty cool as long as one doesn’t drop on you.

Lunch today was 4 slices of bread with Vegemite. The bread was purchased from a bakery on Jalan Oberoi close to my house for 12,000rp. Still got most of left in the fridge. The power was off for a while so I had to make do without toasting it.

Dinner was a plate of rice with dark greens and a chunk of fish covered in a spicy curry like sauce. Was quite good and cheap too at 3,000rp.

If you want to go for budget food it isn’t hard in Bali, all you have to do is look away from the shiny restaurants and there will be a local somewhere handy selling cheap food. For me its always 50/50, do I want to eat nasi goreng for 6,000rp or have an order of sushi for 10,000rp that would cost 25,000rp in the US. I kind of feel that having all these great eating options it would be a shame not to try them.

Nick, we know now that you are adjusted to the Bali economy…when you say,

“do I want to eat nasi goreng for 6,000rp or have an order of sushi for 10,000rp that would cost 25,000rp in the US”

I can’t remember the last time I paid 25,000Rp for Sushi in the US. Congrats mate - you are thinking in Rp…

Nick, ya gotta watch that Vegemite!. It’ll put hairs on your chest!. Good to see that you are devouring a bit of old Oz tucker.

The builder guy sounds interesting and perhaps he could build my house!. I’ll talk to you later mate.
