Flying Korean Airlines a couple of weeks ago I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a movie from 1975 starring Jack Nicholson as an inmate in an Oregon mental institution. The movie was based on a book by Ken Kesey, a member of the Merry Pranksters, a group of guys who were at the cutting edge of the counter culture scene in the early 60’s. I remember seeing a copy of their bus Furthur in downtown Eugene one time in the annual Eugene Celebration.
Ken Kesey also wrote Sometimes a Great Notion, starring Henry Fonda and Paul Newman, about a family of loggers in Oregon. While I was in Eugene last saturday I strolled down Willamette St. where I used to work and came across the new Ken Kesey memorial. Eugene still has a strong hippie mentality, which is cool. Nice to see a town recognise one of its most celebrated people.
