Jimbaron Beach dinner

Sunday night and we have spent all day sorting out stuff, odds and ends that need to get get taking care of before Sean leaves. We took way too much time figuring out a problem in Photoshop and afterwards visited Captain Haddocks restaurant where Armadi is making us t-shirts and Internet Outpost.

Dinner was at Jimbaron, the place where Ebong (tadpole) lives. There’s a main road that goes most of the way and with some concentration it’s possible to have a relatively stress free journey. There are a couple of places where I’ve seen plate-size holes in the asphalt 2 inches deep, hit one of those and you’ll be doing a wheelie. It seems as if they’ve filled some in which I’m thankful for.

We stopped at Ebong’s place but he was out, glad to see that his road wounds have started to heal the other night.

The Ramayana place that Jason brought us to on the beach was fully booked with busloads of Chinese tourists so we went next door. At Jimbaron you negotiate for your fish then they cook it with all the other items. The guy wanted 50,000rp per kilo of squid and we said no. The fellow after him sold it to us for 40,000 and we had a snapper and some clams. We sat at a table on the beach and interviewed each other using the video camera.

We saw a bunch of local kids doing some sundown fishing using rods.

The food finally arrived and we dived into it. Ant and Chris, we’re bringing you here in November, that’s all I can say.

It’s interesting to see the number of Asian tourists who frequently Jimbaron. Wee-Cheng told me mainland Chinese are the largest growth market for Asian tourism, growing by 30%-50% per year, it seems to back up his story from my view.

We paid and the bill was 130,000rp including water.

The ride back was more exciting than coming out, firstly because I didn’t have any warning of bumps that were coming and secondly because people drive a little crazier at night. At one point there was a large group of people strolling around along the roadside at some makeshift food place, there were also people riding motorcycles and bicycles without lights and going the wrong way. I’ve seen some weird things on the bypass road, including a small group of 7 year old girls dressed in school uniforms riding their bikes in the fast lane.

We made it home okay and discussed stuff on spreadsheets. A lot to do on Monday.
