Jimbaran for the novice

I’d heard all the stories, I’d seen all the photos, but nothing can really prepare you for the experience of Jimbaran. Last time I was in Bali I missed out cos I was not on speaking terms with my guts for a few days. This time I wanted to make sure I got out there. Preparation was key and we had a late breakky/skipped lunch to ensure we would be ready to chow down on the beach.

The cab ride down there from Poppies II cost about Rp22,000 but it could have been less if our cabbie knew where he was going and if we could have described what we were after better. There are literally hundreds of places to choose from in a couple of different areas around Jimbaran, but we wanted a place the lads had been to before.

The entire stretch of beach was doing a roaring trade but we had no trouble finding a table. After ordering 2 kilos of squid, a snapper, 1 kilo of prawns, and some clams we sat down at the table with a couple of large Bintangs and soaked in the atmosphere and munched on some complimentary peanuts. Shortly after, a waitress stopped by with potatoes, rice, greens, cucumber/tomatoes, roasted garlic chips and some sauce-type things.

A little while later (and another couple of beers), the food arrived….and then more food arrived…and then the entire table and some of the table next to us was covered in food. I couldn’t believe what we’d ordered amounted to this much.

It was all very delicious and I think I am starting to sprout extra appendages (not sure if it’s squid or prawn), I ate so much of it. It’s a place I know my family would enjoy since they love seafood so much.

Our bill came to Rp350,000 between three of us, which ain’t bad for effectively all-you-can-eat fresh seafood.

Reading that post was pure torture.

Shame on you for feasting at Jimbaran without us!!!!!

Without a doubt, Jimbaran is my most favorite place to eat in the whole wide world!

I’ve always thought that when you have a great feed at Jimbaran with a few good friends at sunset, that’s when you really know you’re lucky to be in Bali.

How come you did not stop off at the Inter Continental and pick me up and rescue me from the 400 Czechs who had invaded the resort - I mentioned the $82USD/night rates right? Go to Bali and escape the crowds at Jimbaran - can’t wait for next week when I’m back there for Xmas!

OH

MY

GOD

I’m in culinary mourning.

600 miles from the nearest ocean. And I ain’t all that crazy about seafood from the Texas side of the Gulf at that (a little petroleum in your food goes a long way…)
