Jimbaran Bay: Grilled fish on the beach

Tuesday night Chris, Anil, Pria and I went down to Jimbaran to eat fish on the beach. The beach at Kedonganan is loaded with places that all have the same formula, you choose what fish you want from the tanks and boxes, sit at a table on the sand and wait for 20 minutes for the food to be delivered, grilled.

We went to a place I had never been to before and straight away I started negotiating for fish. The guy 80,000rp per kilo for snapper and I offered 40,000rp. They messed around for a while without really dropping the price that much so we left and checked out place next door. I told the guy I wanted 40,000rp per kilo for snapper and he offered 50,000rp. I said "How about 40,000rp?" and he agreed. The place we went to had a menu for all the fish and we got 50% off all the items, as long as we didn't tell anyone else. When I was negotiating some Japanese tourists were busy choosing fish and I deliberately pulled the guy aside and gave him a chance to give me a deal.

The food was pretty good, although not the food avalanche I have been used to. We enjoyed snapper, squid and prawns which was served with rice and kankung vegetable. Together with a few large Bintangs and a couple of small fruit trays the bill was 350,000rp.

Of course the strolling minstrels came over to entertain and actually played a song in Hindi from an Indian movie. The table next to us was all Japanese and they had a selection of Japanese songs.

Jimbaran is great for one evening and sitting on the beach on a pleasant night with friends is a cool thing.

Nick you are a bit of a wide boy really in a nice sort of way.

One thing is for sure Nick after having lived in Bali for 2yrs coming up, or is it 3 Nick? you are no Mug when it comes to dealing with the Balinese.

Woul i be right in presuming that you absolutely loathe places where you have these so called hench men who try to come the big guys with loads of brovado and threats if you dont pay their fee. As you have found Nick there are quite a few of these places in Bali where these “PEA BRAINERS” as i call them lurk among the shadows.

The thing is that they will end up making less money than they would if they just put a bit of thought into things and tried to be reasonable rather rushing into things like a bull in a china shop.

Barrie when are you in Bali matey next doing a bit of the old Wombat wanderings. Thats another thing Barrie have you actually been to Nicks BBQ’S yet. Me thinks you have but me nots so sure.

Its long overdue i hit Bali and to be perfectly honest i have had chances already, but as i stated to a friend the other day you cannot go thru life putting things off till another day as one day that day will be your last day. !

No but seriousley Nicko and Barrie i am just finishing a contract which is finally due to finsih within the next 3- 4 months and my main plan was to get over there for a few months. The only thing is i was in this position a year ago and then the contract was extended, which you never know could happen again.

I have put some serious thought into Bali at Xmas even if it is just for 2wks (if im still in this contract) but is that not when you fly back to blighty Nick ?

If i am coming across i would rather make sure you are there Nick mate as i am sure i could snatch you away from house duties for the odd night and also put your vast wealth of local knowledge to good use. Also a must would be a trip to the shops to see the man in action haggling a deal. Just GRRREEEEATTTT would that be, so fingers crossed and a penny in the fountain at dinner time. (seems to be bringing me luck and some bucks!!)

Anyway over and out
Sparks are out
Mark
