Irish music at the Cat & Fiddle Pub in Sanur Bali

Tuesday night I went down to Sanur to attend the weekly Irish music session. The Cat & Fiddle has moved from Jl. Mertasari to its new busier location on Jl. Cemara. I showed up about 7.30pm and sat at the bar. Most of the tables were occupied by tourists from Europe eagerly awaiting the music to come. While sitting at the bar I saw Mark Wilson, owner of the Cat & Fiddle and Honorary British Consul (I think they picked the right guy!). He and I had discussed nationality issues for the new baby. This time though Mark was very busy talking to customers. He told me he was waiting for his twin brother Phil who plays guitar and sings (Mark plays the accordion).

When 8pm approached Phil showed up and together with a male flutist, they got into their well known list of English and Irish folk tunes. The crowd, not all familiar with the lyrics got into the easy going folk music groove, and that traditional European type music made people feel comfortable.

"I'm a Rambler, I’m a Rambler, from Manchester way.
I get all my pleasures the hard moorland way.
I may be a wage slave on Monday,
But I am a free man on Sunday."

The evening got an unexpected boost from one of the guests. At the back of the pub was a long table of family members on holiday. One guy, a skinny grey haired man from Ireland, who sounded like he had taken 2 weeks off from his peat cutting business, was making a racket. Shouting and laughing, singing all the songs at the top of his lungs and waving his arms. This guy was drunk when I arrived and his rosy face just keep getting rosier as the night went on. He would stroll out to the bar area and spot somebody's wife. "You're looking awful lovely me darlin", he would say before planting a kiss on her cheek. One older Australian man and his wife joined me at the bar and the man commented as he looked on with amazement, "He is SO pissed, he is SO pissed."

A table of Dutch people in front of me were peeing their pants at this guys antics, but he was completely oblivious. I'm sorry that I didn't get a photo of this guy.

The Cat & Fiddle were just introducing the new Storm beers and I tried a couple Sandstones, the light colored beer. They had some lovely young ladies going from table to table promoting the beer and people did try them. Storm beer is stronger than Bintang and will leave you with a dent the next day.

If you are staying in the Kuta area and want a good vibes music experience that is folk oriented, try the Cat & Fiddle. Musicians are welcome to join in.
