How right you are Nick!. Nick is right though, a copy of War & Peace wouldn’t go astray.
It has been a very warm day here in Kuta but even so it didn’t deter Candika from her daily shopping sojourn. My wallet has stopped crying now. If you get a chance, walk down to the end of Poppies Lane 2. At the first bend you will come across rows upon rows of shops selling much the same thing and this goes right down to Jl Pantai Kuta. There is an increase in tourists although not as much as what is needed.
We decided to check out the sunset tonight and headed back down Poppies 2 AGAIN (I empties my wallet at the hotel for sanity reasons) to the beach. As it has been since the bombing, the beach was practically deserted. However the ubiquitous licensed hawkers still plied their wares. Candika settled for a French Braid in her long hair. The woman wanted to give me one and mumbled something when I took my cap off. A shaved head is a lovely deterrent!. However, entrepeneureal as they always are, the woman then offered to give my head a massage. I tried to explain that my wife was an experienced masseuse, but this comment was ignored and Candika received a grunt whereas I received a smile (He, he…!).
Now for my restorans. Last night Candika and I ate at the Bali Corner.
Bali Corner (Opp. Barong Hotel)
Poppies Lane 2
We weren’t really impressed because of many reasons. Firstly, as the name suggests, it is on a corner and subsequently one tends to inhale more toxic fumes from the passing motorbikes and cars than oxygen!. Secondly it was the bluntness of the service (if I could call it that!) and the small portions considering the price paid for the meals.
Candika decided on the Nasi Campur (Rp15,000) but commented on the dryness of the sate and the high salt content. I won’t write her comments because they are censorable!.
I decided on the Ayam Goreng Mentega (Rp20,000). Three small pieces of chicken (2 legs and a knuckle) were happily floating in a sea of oil and melted butter. I could have done 8 laps on the plate had I brought my swiming togs!. However it too was highly salty and the nasih putih was dry and hard.
Atmosphere: Boring
Food quality: Just average
Service: Just average
Rating: 4.5
However, tonights meal was a different feast entirely. On the return from watching the sun set slowly and beautifully over the golden sands of Kuta beach, we stopped at a small cafe which seemed interesting as it was very busy, and the music seemed to pounded the pavement!.
Rainbow Cafe
Poppies Lane 2 (Beach end)
A small open air cafe with 12 tables was a delight to dine in. The place pulsated with the sounds of Santana, Eric Clapton, and a Hendrix song was heard much to my delight!
Candika decided on the Bakmi Goreng (Rp18,000) and enjoyed it immensely. She even left some on the plate (unusual for my wife!) because the portion was too large.
I tried an old favourite. Chicken Chap Chay (Rp15,000) and from the moment it was placed in front of me, I never stopped until the plate was as shiny as my scalp!. Ther vegetables were blanched superbly, and the chicken was mouth-watering soft.
The choice of foods was great and even included a selection of Chinese Food.
Atmosphere: Excellent
Food Quality: Above average
Service: Excellent
Rating: 7
I was on Jl Melasti today and decided to drop in on one of Bali’s institutions - The Bali Aussie. The atmosphere is still there but the prices have increased dramatically.
