Shortly after the discovery of a new ‘Garden of Eden‘ on the island of Papua, scientists have found an ‘Indonesian Pompeii‘ on Sumbawa. Looking at a map of Indonesia you can see that Sumbawa is the second island to the east of Bali (Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa). Surfers know the island for its breaks, Lakey Peak and Scar Reef.

Recently scientists from Indonesia and the US, used ground-penetrating radar to zero in on a lost civilization, buried by a volcanic explosion. Mt. Tambora exploded in 1815 and was an absolutely massive eruption, bigger even than Krakatoa. The Tambora were buried with their culture and evidence has been found of their living quarters and implements.

Another fascinating bit of an amazing country.
