The recent bombings in Kuta and Jimbaran have shocked local people, who were working hard to get their economy back on track. The other day during a taxi ride to Denpasar, the driver told Ika that he thought this time around the economy will rebound quickly. I sense the same thing and think by next summer we will be rolling again. The Bali bomb blast highlighted once more the depths to which radicals will stoop and the ease at which they can strike an open society.
In the last 2 years there have been internal upheavals in JI (Jemaah Islamayah), some elements wanting to continue their aggressive actions, others preferring to pursue a peaceful path of preaching. They certainly do not have much support among the Muslims people I meet. Most people turn their nose up and say "They're crazy."
According to a BBC article a terror suspect was arrested in Jember, East Java, and has been sent to Bali for questioning. Records show he had shared a room in Denpasar with one of the bombers, leaving 3 days before the Bali blasts. I'd say he know something about what was going on.
