Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim country. In the last few year there have been examples of fanatical religious followers performing terrible acts of violence. These acts are sometimes claimed to be aimed at the US and its allies, but often just end up killing and injuring regular Indonesians.
President SBY is a no nonsense guy and has cracked down on the people spouting radical ideas and also the perpetrators of terrorism. His government understand that in order to stop terrorists its is important to cut off their support. Rebellious ideas can easily breed in a climate of poor economics and education and people like Amrozi can easily be led astray. Too often Islam is in thre news for its role in terrorism, but most Indonesian Muslims are peaceful and are just trying to get through life like everyone else.
Indonesian vice President Joseph Kalla met recently with Muslim clerics to show them a video made by Bali Bombers II. They showed no remorse and there teachings have strayed from the mesage most people adhere to. Hopefully the senior clerics will spread the message that radicals will have to be weeded out. Even JI (Jemaah Islamiyah) has split, with one section deciding to spread its message peacefully. A friend of mine used to fly helicopters for the UN in Ambon and East Timor a few years ago. He said he saw Arab people in Ambon and was told to leave, when he landed, finally being shot at. Trouble makers from the outside are often the catalyst for other misled people to go nuts. Indonesia has to keep a lid on things for its own survival.
