Indonesia plans new morality laws which hopefully will not come into effect here in Bali

Indonesia is the worlds largest muslim country. Occassionally a looney tune social idea gets put forward by someone in the government with designs on creating a stricter society.

The latest is from Justice ministry official Abdul Gani Abdullah and would ban public kissing or co habitation outside of marriage.

Good luck enforcing that in Bali but Indonesian society as a whole does not seem to me super strict and I hope local people will voice their opposition.

Being a muslim myself I can say that co habitation was good for me and that I recommend it for others who are considering it. A good public kiss does wonders for confidence too.

Hi Nick,

I love your last paragraph. I can’t see this one getting up in a tolerant, multi-religious, personal freedom loving country like Indonesia. The mere mention of doing something like this would be enough to send the Balinese unemployment rate skyrocketing, if the tourists took it seriously.

The Indonesian Govt wouldn’t by any chance have an adviser from the US Religious Right, would they?

Kylie, you can click on the “Bali Blog Archives” link just above “Related Articles” at the end of any of Nick’s posts. From there you’ll see archives by month or categories.

Public smooching, that is banned in India as well. Try holding hands on Marine drive - the sea side of Bombay and the moral police will jump in. and another fanatical political party bashes up restaurants and cardshops come valentine day. Where is the message: Spread love not hate gone to?
