How the local merchants are doing here in Kuta Bali

The latest update on the scene for the locals merchants is tourism is slowly coming back although business has got to be down 60-70% over a year ago. With the launch of the new airline Air Paradise and Aussies trickling back I things are heading back in the right direction. For the locals in Kuta however who rely almost totally on tourism this isn’t fast enough. Poppies I & II are still quiet and you can see it on the faces of vendors on Jalan Legian….they just want a sale.

Here’s Pub Bagus on Poppies II that does good business in the evenings with their pizza, beer and advertised showings of pirated movies ( forget about FBI warnings ).

If you’re a tourist and are in buying mood there’s bargains to be had. Everything from sculptures, to batik clothing and decorations to CD’s and DVD’s ( pirated of course ).

These guys on Poppies I are like many others who spend all day hoping to hook a customer.

The local garbage collector isn’t complaining though, less people to create a mess.

I checked out this shop on Jl. Legian. The 2 staff were very happy to have me browse and snap away. Its funny as you can pick up software and the latest movies for about $2. I haven’t bought any….but I won’t say that will always be the case.

I reckon you will find the Aussies getting back to Bali sooner than most people think. Besides Air Paradise, there will be a new airline flying to Bali come July - Australian Airlines. It’s a subsidiary of Quantas and from what my agent friend tells me, the prices will be competitive.
The great majority of Oz travellers to Bali come from here in dear ol’ Perth, and from the people I have spoken to at Campus and by email, they’ll be headin’ back once this fracas ends in the Middle East.

Nick,

Right on that you showed a picture of Bagus.

I had many a drunken night there during the World Cup 1998. It was nuts! I remember watching the Brazil/Scotland game - there was so much screaming, yelling, and chanting going on.

I plan to be there in 2006 rooting for the USA team to do even better than the quarterfinals. Hopefully we’ll play England (your home country, I believe) and we’ll wager a night of Bintangs on it.

Hi! Friend and I are supposed to leave Saipan Thursday night around 3 a.m. to go to Guam and then to Bali after a 12 hour lay over. Are people panicking after the announcement. Do you think it is safe to arrive in Bali now?

I rather doubt that we will back out now. Of course, it is possible that the airlines will cancel I suppose. I feel we should probably stay home, but have no common sense at this time on this subject. I believe we are arriving on continental. I do not plan to be the one to back out on this trip.

Any thoughts on this?? Thanks,

In the BootsnAll travel Update Mid-March, Sean seemed to sum up the subject of travelling in dangerous times just perfectly.
But I will add that if we stopped travelling just because of a war, terrorist activity, or because of this pneumonia scare, then we would just ‘vegetate’ in our own lounge rooms. What kind of life is that!.
