How Sharia Law can be implemented in Indonesia

Today I received one of those chain emails where everyone is asking everyone to sign a petition. This one is about the anti-pornography bill that might pass sometime soon. Westerners and Balinese people seem to be the main ones panicked by the bill, as it would be one step closer to Sharia Law, the Islamic justice system.

A Jakarta Post article talks about a case in Aceh, where a former GAM (rebel) representative has been arrested for being with a French woman after dark. Locals reported the 2 alone in car at night and if found guilty of ‘dating’ her, he could be publicly caned. She however, will be freed as she is not a Muslim. I can handle that version of Sharia Law. If I can drink Storm beer, BBQ red meat and watch soccer, they can cane all the sexy dancers they want.

You should have provided the email appeal and the link! Since you didn’t I’m doing it for u.
Subject: Fwd: Asking for your help re Bali

Pls help Bali in its crisis by signing this online petition re: proposed Pornography Legislation by Indonesian government.

Dear friends and family,
As you may have heard, in Indonesia right now they are trying to pass a new law in Indonesia against all types of Pornography. This means that even tourists will have to cover themselves from head to toe in clothing when visiting Bali or other islands in Indonesia. People who show too much skin will be thrown in jail. No more shorts or tank tops - and forget trying to enjoy the sun in a bikini!!!

As you can imagine, this will destroy all tourism in Bali and will completely change the lifestyle here. As an Indonesian citizen this terrifies me and everyone else here. This is NOT a joke.

PLEASE help us. We are standing together to reject this law. There is a petition online and EVERY signature will help. We only have a few days left until they make the decision so all of us here in Bali will appreciate if you can sign and ask your friends and family to sign too.

Bali has gone through such hard times with the bombings, bird flu,Tsunami and more, so we cannot let this law pass, or tourism will come to a stop all together. Bali’s main income is from tourism so we cannot let this happen.

We are just asking you to visit this web page below and PLEASE sign your name and ask everyone you know to sign too.
We don’t have much time.

The reason I didn’t include the link was I felt it was a bit over the top. Okay there are some nuts that want Sharia Law, and have tried to pass this bill. People all over the country are outraged including Muslim womens groups.

The bill in its original form won’t pass and most of the main fears are unnecessary.
