Its a steamy day here in Kuta and taking care of things at Internet Outpost on Poppies II.
The owner, Hendra is here and we have been discussing the proposed visa changes. The PATA ( tourist conference ) has just ended after a week and hopefully momentum will build naturally to stop this change happening.
Hendra told me that the Indonesian tourist industry had plans to target short haul and medium haul tourists from Singpore, Malaysia and Taiwan, Japan but SARS has thrown a curveball.
This morning I went to Cafe Moka with my friend Yumi and there was a little kid aged about 3 who was running amok, peeling of stickers on the display cabinets and sticking them on the walls, chairs and his mother. He was on patrol to check out other tables for something interesting and a young Indonesian girl caught his attention. He tried to tackle her from behind and had to be pulled off by the girl’s parent ( reminds me of someone I know ).
I stopped off at Bintang supermarket to get another phone card. My ‘pulsa’ or minutes had run out and this cost me 110,000rp. The attendant at the booth types it in and off you go. Takes about 3 minutes. This is also a good place to buy a new phone.
Bintang is the best supermarket here and is located on Jalan Legian.

That would be bad news indeed. I feel safer with planes loads of good old Aussies and Americans loaded with dollars and going home after a few weeks.
A woman I know went on holiday with her daughter and grandkids to Bulgaria last year.
She said the hotel had a room with a load of video games for guests to play. These guys, who the staff said were Russian mafia types, kicked everybody out of the room when they wanted to play and put their guns on the tables next to them.Nobody complained too much.
Nick
what’s the approx cost of a non-fancy standard phone at the Bintang supermarket?
I think the cost is around $45. I can check.
We got the botton basement one and it was over 1 million Rp with the chip needed for a phone number = over $100US
Hi Nick,
I was reading in the Jakarta Post the other day that the Indo Govt intends to target Russia as a source for tourists to increase tourist numbers. I wonder if they will have to pay the proposed new visa fee?. Sure would hate to see the Russian Mafia entrenching themselves in our beloved island of Bali.
