We chatted about how to move ahead in the future and it would be great to help create a trekking area in the highlands. The best way to get locals to stop polluting, poaching and deforesting is for them to see trekkers paying money to visit the forest. Turn the poachers into guides.
We touched on the difficulties of getting things done in Indonesia due to corruption and people's priorities and also the difficulties of working with other westerners. Norm is dynamic and has started environmental projects all over, but it's always been him alone. I suggested that westerners have huge ego's and fragile personalities and that's why expats in Bali have a hard time working together (myself included). If someone pisses me off, my immediate reaction is 'buzz off'. Many of the expats you find in Bali have had to battle for their situation (immigration, corruption, local anomalies, competition etc.) and can be crusty and opinionated. Often times entrepreneurs don't make the best managers / team players.
Norm and I will get together at some point and talk about things regarding the trekking. I'm all for helping the locals, help themselves to protect a beautiful part of Bali.
