After breakfast at Cafe Moka this morning, Nick took me down to see a guy about renting a bike for the week I’m here. I’ve not ridden a motorbike/scooter before and Nick was helpful with some basic tips to get me started.
My first task was to take off smoothly so Nyomen wouldn’t think he’d just rented his bike to an idiot. Of course, he had, but I didn’t want to make him nervous. After a jerky but uneventful ride back to the house, Nick went inside to clear off some photo disks. I decided to practice my driving in the alleys around the house.
I figured out pretty quickly that the right foot pedal is not the accelerator like in a car. High revs and no action until I take my foot off the brake and shoot forward in a real hurry. Glad I didn’t wait til cruising on Poppies Lane to sort that out.
When I got back to the house, Nick was ready to take me on my maiden voyage. We were going to drive out to Uluwatu and Nusa Dua. Nick has a few snaps and will no doubt describe the places we went to better than I, but the riding was fun. I got to open ‘er up a bit on the main roads and putter along peacefully once we were on the country roads.
I’ve got a long way to go before I’m an ace, but I feel a lot more confident on the bike and am looking forward to the road trip to the east we’ve got planned for tomorrow and Wednesday. I’m sure Joe E would be worried about the danger of a little knowledge and me on a bike. I’ll be sure to ask him for tips when I see him again.
