Hanging out with the relatives in Seminyak Bali

My house has been a hive of relative activity with Jevon getting attention from all of Ika's family. In the morning her Auntie Daisy comes over to bath him, her sister Ningrum looks after him sometimes in the afternoon, as does her mum and the younger brother Brahma watches over him when he's sleeping. Its great actually and I am glad they all came to visit. A couple of days ago Ika's father came from Java and its funny having him here. He's used to the kampung in central Java and not used to hanging around 'bules' (foreigners). Last night Ika, mum, dad and I went to Rumours restaurant on Jl. Oberoi in Seminyak. Ika suggested it might be nice for them to get some experience with westerners. We arrived and the place was quite busy, I could see their heads spinning looking all the extravagant people laughing, joking and dining.

The menu was a total mystery and a look of horror came over Ika's mother's face went she learned nasi (rice) wasn't on the menu. Mashed potato was and when Ika explained what it was her mother screwed up her face and said 'disgusting'. Trying to help I suggest Chorizo sausages for her dad, knowing he likes 'sosis'. They had beef and pork and I said "Its okay he can get the beef." "He replied in Indonesian "No, I want to try the pork." He ended up with a plate of pork ribs. I guess where no one's looking its all good.

Ika got beef stroganoff and her mother pan-fried chicken with fries. Her dad said, "If I knew it was like this (big) I would order half." In Java you can order half in a warung. He also commented that he liked a warung better than rumah makan (restaurant).

I know they think were all crazy paying 200,000rp for food and drinks, when they can eat at home for 1,000rp or less per person. We'll have more adventures to come and I look forward to helping them explore a different reality.
