Today is Friday Bali time and my wedding is on Wednesday.
Ika told me I have to wear a suit at the muslim wedding with a little ceremonial cap on. Not having a suit I went down to Matahari in Kuta Square where they have cheap ones on the rack. I picked out this black thing, a couple of shirts and a tie. The suit cost almost 1m rp originally but they had a 50% off deal if you bought 2 items ( jacket and the pants). So I got my suit for $50.
A pair of shoes where next for about $25.
Matahari Kuta Square is located next to the McDonalds, down the street from the KFC on the corner. It has 4 floors selling a mixture of western type goods, Nikes, Tevas and local gear. They are great at ripping off overseas brands. I think they sell a whole line of polo shirts called something like Jack Ticklaus.
The store has plenty of staff, all standing in little groups wearing there blue shirts and tops. They must spend hours just hanging out and waiting for someone to ask them something. I had 3 of them unwrapping shirts, shoes and other items for me.
There used to be a Matahari in Legian, also next to a McDonalds but it closed. The other one in town in behind Planet Hollywood at the roundabout at Simpang Siur. Very handy place to check out if you are on holiday and need something. My sandals were falling apart and I picked up a new pair of Tevas for $20.
Here in Kuta it is a steamy Friday night and we are in the middle of a evening downpour. Some of the internet places have no connection but I am one of the lucky ones to get a machine in Agung net at the start of Jl. Benesari.
The new storm drains do work for the most part here in Kuta. The only place that has left over flooding from the previous nights is Jl. Benesari, which did not get new drains. One little hitch I spotted early on was the way the drains are built with a cement rim around them in the middle of the brick lined street, making them the highest point in the street. Reminds me of my bathroom floor where the drain hole seems to be the highest point in the floor. No matter, the water now has somewhere to go and with shopkeepers busily sweeping the water out of their shops and into the drains the flooding can be avoided.
Promise to show you the cheap suit sometime.

Hi Nick,
Congratulations to you and Ika on your forthcoming wedding and the birth of your first child. I’ve been following your account of the preparations with interest.
Isn’t it strange that the English national dress, originally designed for horse riding in a relatively cool climate, has come to be regarded as the appropriate thing for a man to wear at a Muslim wedding in a hot climate.
G’day Nick,
Getting closer mate. I agree with Chris, getting married in a suit will be like wearing a boiler jacket in a sauna. Take plenty of saputangan to wipe your brow!.
Sure am going to miss being there to witness the whole ceremony. Best of luck mate to the both of you.
Don’t envy you having to wear a black suit in the heat of Java, hope they get things over and done fairly quick.
