Garuda spending big bucks to get Bali back on track

Garuda Indonesia are spending bug bucks to update their fleet of aircraft. The Jakarta-Bali-Perth route is crucial to Bali’s economy and Garuda have responded by ordering new planes from Boeing.

Garuda is one of the more affordable carriers and I have flown with them several times. If there is a choice in Indonesia, its always better to fly Garuda than a domestic airline, because of the safety standards, pilots, maintenance.

Garuda is ordering 18 Boeing 737 New Generation series followed by 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. This is a great news following the collapse of Air Paradise.

G’Day Nick,

Received a phone call this morning from Garuda informing of the flight changes also. If you are flying into Perth from DPS then your flight won’t get in until 01.30am. Also in the new planes, there will be no business class apparently.

Does anyone know where Garuda is getting the money from for these purchases?

Garuda went essentially broke about 20 years ago, but has since been subsidized by the government. Corruption (ahem) may be involved. Service from America was ended a decade ago, so no more flights from LAX to JKT.

Can you imagine? Garuda — the national airlines of Indonesia — can’t even get it together to maintain flights between the U.S. and Indonesia? I find this amazing, sad, and another disappointing comment on the state of Indonesian politics.

They should be ashamed.

SBY is doing what he can, but the devastating level of corruption and inefficency in the country is absolutely appalling, and there has been very little real progress is the last decade.

I’ve got some great links on Indonesia over at my blog, including Jakartass, Indcoup, Greenstump, and Treespotter, and they are covering the situation from an expat view in great and insightful detail, plus there are Indo experts such Indonesia Now for more info.

Also, I’m not using this forum to promote my blog, and I respect the rights of BaliBlog and others, but I want to pass along some important links to others who read this blog about some other great blogs on Indonesia.
