Flying can be dangerous to your health. It certainly was for human rights activist Munir, who was poisoned by Garuda flight attendents on a trip from Jakarta to Amsterdam last year. Amazing that this kind of thing goes on. Actually maybe it goes on all over the place, we’re just to naive to believe it.
Publications like Tempo regularly rip into the Indonesian government and name people responsible for misdeeds. Any Indonesian will tell you that critisizing the government / police and pointing out people has been a no no for a very long time. Munir was not afraid to speak his mind and his death was arranged. Great news that SBY will not put up with that kind of stuff anymore, he is a smart man and understands if Indonesia wants to stp into the 21st Century andsit at the same table with other democratic countries you can’t assasinate people for speaking out.
Now of course there is a lot of hypocracy when westerners start talking about democracy and freedom of speech. Western countries do some nasty stuff themselves when it suits them. The old standby ‘in the nation’s interest’ can be rolled out to cover any action and will be swallowed by most people. The fact that the main perpetator of the assasination is on trial is a big step in the right direction.
