The fuel price hike that has many people nervous here in Indonesia has been implemented without major incident so far.
Yesterday afternoon I filled up at a roadside petrol seller and got a full tank for 10,000rp. The governement has surprised many people by raising the price on petrol 87.5% and kerosene 186%. That is a stiff increase by anyone's opinion. The reason for such a huge increase, is that the government has failed in the past to impose smaller fuel price hikes. Economics have forced the President's hand, so now we get the pain. People don't want to hear common sense, they want cheap everything and this is a rude awakening.
Asking people I have met how they feel about the increases they smile and tell me their own economy is very low and this increase will be hard to deal with. People don't seem like they are raging angry at this point. I hope the strategy works and Presdient SBY is given some time to straighten out the economy and corruption, he's not shying away from it at all and is doing a good job in my opinion.

G’day Nick,
Just spoke to Candika on the phone and she was saying there are demonstrations in Yogya big-time and not very peaceful.
I agree with you about SBY going in the right direction. Let’s wait and see how he handles the economy further down the track.
