Friday in Kuta Bali

Taking care of erands today and trying to avoid getting cooked in the tropical sunshine. That pretty much sums up my day.

I started working out again, and man, I don’t know whether its the energy expended or dehydration, but I was dead this morning. Lunch today was a Thon sandwitch (a footlong tuna, egg, lettuce and tomato with mayonnaise) and a fresh OJ at Cafe Moka (35,000rp).

I have been playing cat and mouse with American tourist Scott, who is new to Bali. He called me, my phone was off, he moved hotel, I called his new hotel, they don’t know him etc. If he’s reading this, sorry, I was super busy, but did try to make contact. Debbie from Alaska is in Bali right now and I’ll have to make time to get together with her. Here in Internet Outpost it is half full, Tina is the employee and they actually have some new music!

What time of day are you working out now? Anything after 7am and I’d be sweating buckets.

I have a restricted hours membership which is cheaper (10am-3pm). The place is AC so I go around 2pm.

I think that you write honestly enough Nick(the little that I have read)………being honest I need your expertise……….am enquiring of one Sin(a name) of a member of a very old Chinese Balinese family……he runs(or used to run a very good fish restaurant) and has quite extensive business interests as well. He used to be a partner of my brother, who is very unwell. Let us be honest here again, he is dying! Sin knows my brother very well of course, and I have met Sin too! If you have any news of the gentleman I would be obliged to you. I am Jeff Lynch, West Brunswick

Jeff, I have not heard of the guy.

Friday in Kuta Bali

Friday morning I had a breakfast at Cafe Moka with Vincent and Akari who had just driven out from Karangasem in east Bali.

Their trip was about 2 hours in a Toyota Kijang with vincent driving and Akari sleeping. The purpose of their visit was to do some shopping and get a taste of the fast life. I said a taste not a bite, they are heading back late this afternoon.

I showed the my new house and Vincent was quite keen on the place. The garden for one thing is more usable and not as muddy as the previous one.

Vincent suggested me painting the cement wall some color, he recommended a certain shade of blue. Grey cement never looks good and maybe I’ll get a wild hair sometime and do it after asking permission. What do you guys think, should I go with a deep blue, an ochre yellow or some other shade.

I had a couple of meetings today and one of them was with the folks at Bali Learn To Surf down in front of the Hard Rock Hotel on Kuta beach. These guys are cool and I know people have a great time in their classes.

I interviewed couple of the staff including Jasmine who is the second best female surfer in Bali.

Jasmine

Aged 18 from Borneo

Nick: How long have you been in Bali?
Jasmine: I’ve been in Bali 6 years.

Nick: How long have you been surfing?
Jasmine: I’ve been surfing 4 -5 years.

Nick: What do you like about surfing
Jasmine: Perfect waves, practicing with tricks, its fun.

Nick: How long have you worked at Bali Learn To Surf?
Jasmine: I’ve been here for 2 years.

Nick: What’s it like working here?
Jasmine: Its fun.

Nick: What’s best thing about working here?
Jasmine: Teaching other people how to surf.

Nick:Why should someone choose this surf school over thw others that are out here?
Jasmine: Safety is our priority and we have very friendy staff,

Nick:What tips would you give a beginning surfer?
Jasmine: Carry your board on the side of you. Try to mainitain the correct position on the board.

Nick: What would you say to a new customer?
Jasmine: Learning to surf is great fun.

Recently the scene at the beach is a little slow and with humid weather sometimes the best strategy is to find some shade.

Jl. Benesari is cut off to motorbikes just past Warung 96 which is a pain for a lot of us. The road workers are doing a good job of getting on with their task and I try to avoid letting the delays get to me. The other day I watched a fellow with a cement saw go along Jl. Legian slicing the road about a food deep down to the soil. They then dug trenches about 8 feet deep to access the pipes and cables.

Friday for me now means taking care of some odds and ends, meeting Chimene and Charlie who is back in Kuta and organizing a Suzuki for Angie and myself to take a trip out east tomorrow.

Angie and I had a laugh the other day when I told her someone had asked me if there was anything going on between us. Angie is actually married with 2 children.

I’ll try my best to get some sleep tonight so I can hit the road early.

Just met Ann and Jeff Miller from Perth who are over here for a couple of weeks here in Internet Outpost. Ann gave me the inside scoop on Barrie and we chatted about what its like living over here.

Friday in Kuta Bali

Here at Global Xtreme I was about to copy my article into the window and my disc will not co operate. Oh well, just another tech thing here in the tropics.

Today I did promo stuff, e-mailing, calling and meeting people in the tourism business. One of those people was Peter Cox who owns SurfTravelOnline. Peter is an Aussie who has been coming to Bali for over 15 years. His company runs tours all over the country and he’s a straight up guy.

I had another meeting this afternoon at Benny’s at the beach on Jl. Arjuna in Legian with a friend from NYC who’s in the antique business. I will be recommending him in the near future and will include a tour of his house which is like mini museum.

Here at Global Xtreme they are playing some kind of Egyptian /Italian music. There are 4 customers, everyone else is probably getting pumped for friday night. My friend Miguel wants to get together and I will call him shortly, though I’m not staying out late.

Weather lovely today and there’s no time like now to enjoy Bali.
