Living in the tropics there are benefits and one that I enjoy is watching the fruit ripen on my trees.
There are 2 papaya trees in the garden and man do these things grow fast! The smaller tree is bursting with small papayas which will be ready in a week or 2.
One was ready and I cut it off with my knife. Ika told me she and her brother cut one down last month and the half they ate was super, but the half they stored in the fridge was not so good. With that in mind I ate the whole thing, just the right size!
Indonesians often prefer fruit that is unripe and a favorite snack is called rujak which features unripe papaya, mango, cucumber, salt, chili and caramel. I think the tradition probably started when people realized the fruit would quickly dissappear when it started to look ripe and so developed a recipe for unripe fruit. Just my guess.
Steamy hot day today and the nyamuk are out in force at my place.
