Lee Rush, father of accused drug trafficker Scott Rush, testified in court in Denpasar, that he tried to stop his son coming to Bali.
Mr Rush said he had a ‘father’s instinct’ that something was wrong and informed the AFP (Australian Federal Police) that his son was planning a trip to Bali, in the hope they would prevent him from leaving. Accordking to Mr Rush, the police agreed, then went back on their word.
Of course I was in Mr Rush’s position I’d be furious. He acted like a responsible parent and it backfired on him. The AFP wanted to nail the whole Bali Nine gang, and capturing one member would set alarm bells off.
Do you think the AFP acted in a legal / ethical manner? Bear in mind that the Bali Nine were involved importing heroin which kills people.

The AFP has a responsibility to Australia as a whole and this overrides any perceived responsibility to an individual serious law breaker, which could result in this person’s criminal colleagues escaping justice. I don’t see how the police could have prevented one of the Bali Nine from travelling to Bali without alerting the others that maybe their cover was blown.
I don’t agree with many of the aspects of how drug problems are handled by the legal system, but as the law currently stands, both in Australia and Indonesia, I accept that the appropriate steps have been taken.

I could tell you a few ways that the police could have intervened without alerting the rest of the gang but i do not think it is up for general viewing on a website.
I am a law abiding person and respect most aspects of the law but i also have a sympathetic, humanitarian approach to life.
I would like to see what five of the nine would achieve in an I.Q test.Stupidity should not be a crime.

With just about every south east asian country between Australia and the herion producing regions of the world having the penalty of death for drug trafficking, do we not owe them some respect for their legal system especially when it helps keep heroin out of Australia?
No, stupidity is not a crime and it’s also no excuse for breaking the law of the particular land you are in. The consequences are widely known, especially in Australia. All simpathy to the families of these idiots but none to them. EAT THE BULLET OR ROT IN JAIL. It would be interesting to see how many will “convert” to Islam after these stupid people discover that their “Christian religous experiences” they are going through now (however temporary) will not do them any good what so ever in the eyes of the court. Mr Bean was never this funny.
Scott Rush was 19 years old and I do think that given his father dobbed him in that he deserves to be treated in a different way to the experienced traffickers and travellers.
Parents need to be encouraged to look out for their children. Parents who have the courage to take bold steps to prevent their children from being engaged in crime deserve to be supported.
According to the Rush family his legal advisors had said that the Australian police had promised to prevent Scott from going to Bali. They let him down real bad. Mr Rush himself said that he would have gone to Bali and stopped his son from getting involved in serious crimeif he had not made the promise made to him.
All sad and bad
The life in prison is an excellent result death would have been the easy way out as these bastard killed my best frienfd with an overdose of heroine . They must be made an example of to stop other drug traffickers killing our Australian youth
I wonder if Rush’s father alerted the Feds and they promised him that his son would not be able to go to Bali..didn’t he realise it had all gone pare shaped when his son hopped on the plane? Couldn’t he have warned him while he was in Bali that the cops knew all and were lying in wait..therefore possibly aborting Scott Rush’s part in the final free day he will ever live?
stupidity is not a crime but drug smuggling was not a mistake whether is was because of drugs, a easy buck, threats or poverty it was still premeditated and therefore a very serious crime. dont think because your and aussie people are going to rescue you, cerainly not when your business threatens the lives of our children.
Stand up and take responibility whether in your jail cell or on the firing line!
i find that this is a discrasful thing that should neva had happened i am at skwel nd i am doin assiment nd i am comperin the bali nine tril in indoniasia to wat the verdict if it was triled in australia same wif the schappel corby case. i have to diffrent verdics of my own in the discrasful trial. im really very really bord like all hell

Try to stay at school.. English classes Double time would be a good choice.
I dont think these young boys deserve to be executed. Sure they strapped heroin on themselves to bring it here to give to the people that want it. It is the heroin addicts choice to take the drugs that could ultimaly kill them. I think life improsoment is a fair sentence for all the “drug mules” It makes me physically ill to think that there are people out there that condone
any country with imposing the death penalty on someones child, someones mum, someones dad, someones brother ,someones sister………..Just think……….the death penalty does not make our world a happy place
As a medical Doctor I believe Drug Traficking is a serious crime and deserves harsh penalties, but being tied to a tree and shot in the chest and made to gurgle and bleed to death in the most gruesome way ,which is the fate these young men will endure, is just sick and plan redicuolous for the 21st century .Everyone deserves a second chance .The crime they are being convicted for although very serious has not lead to the death of a single person and yet they must suffer this horrifying nightmare of mental torture in a disgusting prison with limited medical care ,and finally death .I am totally opposed to drugs but one musn’t forget that those that turn to drugs are often from less priveledged backgrounds and turn to traficking out of desparation .Lets punish them with a sensible jail term in keeping with moderm westerm judicial sytems rather than indonesias Nazi style disgusting murder machine .And give them that second chance to better themselves evertone deserves .Give them a hand that helps show them the right way rather than a hand that fires a bullet .Blood thirsty revenge is what terrorists seek , not modern governments.
Im respose to the above:
1)Sebastian -have you thought how you wound feel if it was one of your family that went off the rails and traficked drugs ?Would you still be so blood thirsty and want to have them murdered for it ? Would you be able to pull the trigegr of a gun pointed at a 19 yr old kid who made a stupid mistake for which he is sorry ?Would you really get pleasure out of watching him scream and then die in a pool of blood tied to a tree ?ANYONE THAT WANTS THIS SORT OF PUNUSHMENT IS SICK!Its this sort of exttremism that lead to Nazi germany and its regigm of severe out of proprtion murderous punishments of people. I think you should at least give them the respect of choosing the comfort of religion given the horror they are going through especially since they are sorry for their crimes and their crimes have not lead to a single death .
2) Jack Ford- I am so sorry that your friend died of an overdose , but he chose to do the drugs and you cant blame the bali nine for his death , they got caught for their crime and the drugs they were traficking will be destroyed and not hurt anypone

How difficult must it have been for a father to whistle blow on his son?The AFP would have had the intelligence to prevent Scott Rush going to bali without alerting the other members of the Bali Nine. They could have faked a “situation”.
Lee must be absolutley gutted-how responsible is he going to feel if Scott ends up dead.Shame on the AFP they sold the snapper up the river to hook the Marlin.
As a mother of two sons my heart goes out to Lee.He was trying to stop his son having a part in killing others.
