Yesterday I took a trip out to the Bukit to visit one of the ‘directional temples’ (kayangan jagat), Pura Luhur Uluwatu.
This is an important temple which deserves its own article so I wrote a guide piece about it.
Its possible to get to the temple within about 40 minutes from Kuta and you can check out the place in an hour. The surfing beach and cliff overlook is around the corner too which makes Uluwatu a good place for an afternoon visit for those staying in Kuta, Sanur or Nusa Dua.
I read an article today in the Jakarta Post about the volcanic activity in Indonesia right now. Two hikers were killed on Mt. Bromo in East Java, a volcano I have hiked 11 years ago. There is more expected activity in the region but so far no sign of anything in Bali.
I forgot to include this shot of Gunung Batur the other day and wanted to share it. Here’s another one of the sun going down over Kuta Beach, the swell was increasing and this afternoon I saw sizeable waves passing Pantai Kuta.

G’Day Nick,
Good write-up on Pura Uluwatu. Are the damn vicious monkeys still there?.
Volcanic eruptions everywhere. It’s all happening on ‘The Fire on the Rim’. I actually rang Candika this morning and asked her how Gunung Merapi was. She just said “Oh well, if it erupts…so it erupts!”.
Ya gotta love this laid-back attitude of Indonesians.
Absolutely fantastic panarama shot of Gunung Batur. I can’t wait to get back there mate.
so nick are you still surfing? you certainly have the pick of decent break.
i read about your visit to bingin.you were very accurate in your description of the break there.it is a nightmare when theres more than a handful out.
by the way where do i find the surf school in bali? i think it was near hardrock.my girlfriend wants a couple lessons when we are there. a perfect chance for me to take off to uluwatu etc.!! keep surfing!
Wake me up when they are finished with the road work on Jl. Legian.

Cheers everyone,
The monkeys at Pura Uluwatu didn’t seem too bad compared with the ones in Monkey Forest Ubud.
The surf school is in Hard Rock Hotel, right there in front as you walk in.

Road works are all over. They are working on it but seems like we’ll have disruptions for a long time.
