Driving back to Kuta from Dreamland there seemed to be plenty of daylight left and I suggested going to Tanah Lot, the temple that juts out into the ocean which is located north of Canggu.
The coast of Bali is dotted with temples as the ocean and the mountains are 2 very special places in Balinese Hinduism.
The drive took around 40 minutes from Kuta and we arrived in a busy parking area packed with mostly domestic tourists. I’d been to Tanah Lot a couple of times before but thought Chris and Erica might enjoy something new. The price of admission is 5,000rp per person and you have to pass a couple of hundred t-shirt and handycraft shops before reaching the steps that give access to the beach. The locals have maxed out this place’s ‘nicknack’ selling potential.
Walking down the stone steps we saw the tide was out and the beach and rock area was full of tourists getting their photo sessions in front of the temple and breaking waves. They seemed to enjoy this natural environment.
We were approached by Balinese school kids who wanted to practice their English. They did the usual formal introducton and after a short question and answer session gave a short account of some of the ceremonies Balinese people perform throughout their life including teeth filing and marriage.
I enjoyed the changing light and the great view looking north up the coast and watching the waves roll in.
Our ride back to Seminyak was fairly speedy with no traffic jams. We were all a bit tired and looking forward to a shower. I had a sms from Vincent and Akari who were coming over at 9pm with a bottle of bourbon, but that’s another story.
I just added some photos to our little trip to Dreamland.
