Eating satay on Kuta Beach Bali

satay070605.jpgLate this afternoon I strolled down to Kuta Beach to check out part of the odalan (temple birthday celebration) that was going on at Pura Segara, just east of Jl. Pantai Kuta. Actually the thing that drew me to the event was the cloud of satay smoke and the smell. Mmmm!!! There were 2 satay vendors sitting about 20 meters outside the temple, with their equipment (grill, bamboo fan, rocks to keep everything steady and a bowl of pork satay on sticks). I asked "itu barapa harga" (what is the price of that?) and was told "Lima ribu rupiah" (5,000rp) for 10 sticks. The lady asked if I wanted 'pedas' (spicy) and I said yes. My 10 sticks were already cooking, it's kind of like the kampung Burger King, and they have a few cooking already when the customers roll up. My satay sticks were wrapped in part of a banana leaf inside a brown sheet of paper folded in a triangle. The stuff was so good I had no choice but to go back for 10 more.

Talking to one of the Balinese guys in traditional outfits I learned that Javanese tourists who arrive by the busload, do not like pork, being Muslim, and sometimes the satay sellers tell them its chicken. With all that spicy sauce it could be one of her grandkids and you wouldn't know it.

Kampung Burger King - ROFL!!! Yeah even on a Bali micro scale, smart businesses have to be efficient to please their customer base.

Quality food, good tasting, done quickly at a good price point and Nick becomes a repeat customer.
