Eating out in Seminyak Bali

Monday night here in Seminyak my brother Chris and I rode my motorbike over to Rumours restaurant on Jl. Oberoi at around 8pm.

The place was overflowing with customers and the young lady who works as ‘host’ advised us to leave because there was a backlog of people waiting for tables.

We did just that and went down the street to Trattoria, the Italian place that also does great business. We sat at the front close to the street and were offered and little bread thing with tomato on top, plus a bread basket. I ordered a deep fried chicken dish that had an unpronounceable name. It was good and came with salad for 38,000rp.

Trattoria has low candle lighting and a cool atmosphere. It’s not snobby and the staff are all female Balinese. You can eat here without worrying about your bank balance.

While we were there the head chef Eduardo from Florence Italy came over for a chat. He’s been in Bali for over a year and likes it so far. He gave a fruity shot of something that tasted okay. I must say when the owner / chef takes the time to treat me like a person rather than a pesky customer I feel way more inclined to go back.

After Trattoria we rode to a bar opposite Ryoshi on Jl. Seminyak that has several pool tables. Chris is on holiday and was sucking down Bintangs like there was no tomorrow. I was driving so stuck to water which gave me a bigger advantage the more games we played. At the end all I seemed to have to do was make my easy shots and I’d get plenty of chances. We left at 1am and we were both quite tired.

Tuesday morning I got up early in anticipation of my weekly phone call from the BootsnAll HQ in Oregon USA. I was shagged after being out late but got myself down to the beach in Seminyak to check out the clean morning waves and people exercising. It’s funny there is always a somewhat similar scene on the beach at that time. Balinese workers are tidying the beach outside various hotels, expats are checking out the surf, other expats are walking their dogs and the latest new arrivals from Europe are doing their first jog in 20 years trying to use their 10 days trip to morph into fitness (hard when fruity drinks and buffet breakfasts await).

Chris and I hit Café Moka this morning too and discussed some of the items in the Jakarta Post, including British Chanceller Gordon Brown’s offer that Britain will donate $180m (that’s pounds) a year to help relieve foreign debt in developing countries. As you might know Chris does LondonBlog and as a ‘Prisoner of Her Majesty’ suffers along with the rest of the country. Giving money to other countries while the state of the National Health is abysmal is a kick in the teeth for the average working man and woman.

All you Aussies who think you’ve seen a property boom recently, you still are on a winner. Chris told me that in London don’t bother applying for a mortage if you haven’t got $250,000 (pounds) and that a small terrace house along from my parent’s went for $350,000 (pounds ) recently. That’s crazy money and makes me appreciative that at least my rat race is a chosen one.

Carrying on with the hotel review section I visited the Puri Raja on Jl. Padma Utara. This budget hotel is a favourite with Australians and seems a great family hotel. Not really a party spot but the 2 pools and restaurant mean you can have a good time right on the beach in Legian. My guide Agung was a nice guy and told me he had worked at the hotel for 12 years.

G’Day Nick,

Trattoria seems like a good place to check out. I like it when the staff are amiable and the chef/owner are the same with the patrons.

Geez mate, the beach is a tad empty!. What’s it like on the streets?. No worries because you will soon be inundated with kids cos the school hols start here on Friday.
