Driving with Chris in East Bali

Chris and I are just back from a 3-day trip in eastern and northern Bali. We pretty much stayed on the main roads heading out east along the coastal road, staying in Candi Dasa for 2 nights and then Lovina for 1 night.

In my opinion your mode of travel will immediately have an impact on the kind of experience you will have and getting your own transport is the best thing you can do. I rented a Feroza in about 5 minutes from a place on Jl. Dhyana Pura. The price was 100,000rp per day and I was not required to show any kind of ID. I have a fake international license which is 2 years out of date, the guy renting the car doesn't care, and if I come into contact with a cop, I just 'flip the bird' and hit the gas (as I did today coming back from Singaraja).

They would probably try to get some out of you even if you had an international driver’s licence, so that’s a pretty good idea. But can you always escape a road block? And if not, can you enlighten us on the common bribery fee?!

Is there any reason not to use buses to get to Ubud, Candi Dasa and Lovina?
