Driving through Karangasem Bali with Andrea
Andrea and I have just got back from an overnight tour to East Bali.
Andrea has spent a week with me in Seminyak and after visiting Kuta Beach and Tanah Lot and seeing all the commercialism that goes with those places I wanted to give her a chance to see the other side of the island. My friends Vincent and Akari invited us out to their place in Tirtaganga and after quickly hiring a Suzuki on Saturday morning we were off east.
Andrea is quite an experienced traveler and the last thing I want is her going home and telling everyone she meets that Bali is a tourist trap and that it was awful. I’ve heard those comments from people who hang around Kuta and am jumping out of my socks to get them to venture away from what Lonely Planet and their guest house guide.
This island is developing, but it is still beautiful and the natural beauty of Karangasem, the most easterly province blows me away. Vincent and Akari wake up each morning to this view out of their kitchen window.
I got to show Andrea the village aspect of Bali, the east coast and some of the mountains. All that is coming soon, we’re both wiped out after exploring and driving all day.
