Cruising the Bukit with Chris in Bali

Today was the first adventure on a motorbike for Chris and I chose a trip for us I thought would be enjoyable and not too intimidating.

We rode down Jalan Legian after rush hour and took the bypass to Jimbaran where we then headed for the Bukit Peninsula and the famous surf location Ulu Watu.

Jalan Legain can be a madhouse at times but we cruised at a very sedate speed to the bypass entrance close to the Bali Bakery.

Once on the bypass I noticed traffic was going fairly slow which gave Chris plenty of time to get comfortable. I don’t think we topped 30 mph all the way to Jimabaron.

Th local banjar are preparing for Galungan in Jimbaron and had the road blocked off. We were forced to take a detour through tiny alley type streets, temporarily losing each other. Once we turned of the main road and headed up the hill to the Bukit traffic dropped off tremendously. The further we got into the country the less traffic we saw.

After about 30 minutes Chris and I stopped for an iced tea at a roadside place and checked the map.

The sun was strong as always, but in the shade especially with the oceans winds it cools off rapidly.

Arriving at Ulu Watu we walked down the hill to the area of warungs overlooking the surf. A couple of ladies followed us from the parking area hoping to sell us t-shirts. I felt bad as I got their hopes up. One asked me to give her a price for a t-shirt and I said “I paid $55 for that exact shirt in Kuta, how much are you selling it for?” She looked me in the face and said “For you 2 t-shirt for $50.” Quite funny as you can buy them for the equivalent of $3.

We ate our nasi goreng then toured Nusa Dua before jumping on the bypass and heading to Internet Outpost on Poppies II. Chris did really well on the bike, probably as he doesn’t panic.

We’ll go home for a while and take a shower ( not together ).

We are taking a longer tour tomorrow now that Chris is comfortable with the bike. Probably taking the ‘boring road’ that Mick Turnbull took me up around Lake Batur, to the north coast and round to Amed.
