Courier-Mail readers slate Bali drug-runners

The Australian public is known for its straightforwardness, courage and compassion. Over the last 3 years these have all been tested with the Bali Bombing, Iraq II, the tsunami and Schappelle. As light begins to shine on the Bali Nine, Courier-Mail talks about the 9 young accused drug-traffickers. The Queensland newspaper indicates the wrath of the Australian public is alive and kicking.

Who is the villain in this drama? The accused drug-traffickers, the Australian Federal Police who tracked them or the Indonesian legal system that want to shoot them if convicted? Its a tricky situation and one that could divide people. I know its easy pointing the self-righteous finger at someone else, but how would I feel if one of the Bali Nine was a relative?

Does the attempted importation of heroin into Australia mean these young people should lose their lives? Should the Australian government try hard to talk down the punishment after it has tried hard to catch them?

If you ask the readers of the Courier-Mail the consensus seems to be Top Em. Personally I am in favor of extended periods (years) of supervised community service, maybe even a decade. The offender could then be released with the firm impression that it is hard work that gets you through life. Fortunately Australia has a prisoner hand-over agreement with Indonesia so there is a possibility of a deal, which I hope happens to save all of us from the repercussions.

Had to laugh reading those comments, I bet if they asked for volunteers for the firing squad hands would be shooting up all over.

Has Australia tried their hardest to catch the Bali 9 drug traffickers???? Seems a pity that they can tip off another country to nab them when they could have easily done it at the airport back here……on Australian turf……makes me wonder!!!!

I think Australia & Indonesia are in no win situations…
If they had of let them return to OZ we would all be up in arms saying Indo did not do a very good job look at these people with heroin strapped to their bodies that got thru customs etc, there would be so many questions raised & people would start accusing Indo of planting it on them etc…
They’d get a few years a rap on the knuckles & set free!

This way they get punished for doing something illegal in a country that has a hard stance against it & they deal with the consequences end of story!

I would have done the same. Why giving them just a jail sentence? The Indonesians have the right laws for that.In fact ,sent all the drug dealers to Indo.

You can’t blame anyone except the people that did it. How could you be so nieve how long has Schappelle Corby been in the news, they knew they would get the death sentence. What if Australia had let them enter Sydney airport and the drugs had gone missing, then we would be blameing them for not getting them in Indo.

Some people always want to blame everything on someone else, why don’t people finally take responsibility for their own actions.
