The Corby case keeps hogging the news with the latest reports from Canberra suggesting that the bacteria sent to the Indonesian embassy was not harmful. Last Friday was a media circus for sure and with the Corby relatives shouting and screaming, not to mention the Balinese cops creating havoc by pushing and shoving, they had plenty to cover. A recent article in the Australian talks about the press-packs down-time in Bali. The court scene had the excitement level of the State Of Origin, but sitting outside the Kerobokan jail feels like a sentence in itself. Some of them apparently find the heat hard to deal with. Lucky for the photographers and journalists they were not here in January.
The young Channel 9 cameraman (young guy in the white shirt) who was sent crashing through a tree outside the courthouse was standing in front of me for about an hour. I heard him talk to his mate about getting a new large battery for his camera. When the stampede came out of the court he was left on the floor with a busted knee and some scratches. Here in Bali today I have not heard anyone mention the case or the latest events. Ika was watching the Indonesian news and they showed footage from Canberra. They did a good job of interviewing some Australian citizens back in Australia who said they thought Corby got what she deserved. I think hearing that greatly helps keep the lid on things. We do not want a national pushing and shoving contest.

Nick,
I can only say I hope this get over soon. Poor Corby, but what can I say?
Well Nick, I haven’t mention before that I found this blog because of this case (at least there’s benefit of it), and I found that this blog is so informative that I don’t have to search in other site various and recent information about Bali. As Indonesian living in Europe, I often miss Bali. I still recall my memory on this beautiful island, I wish I can go back there at least next year. Thank you Nick for making this very useful, informative, and beautiful site that we can even try to feel the atmosfer of Bali even without being there.
ps. Mannnn your writings about traditional foods there are so cool makes me miss Bali more…
salam,

Dear all Corby supporters,
This is only a friendly advice from a humble Indonesian who want peace between 2 neighbours:
1. Please do not try to ask your government to intervene in this case. It’s unnecessary and only waste your energy and money, and I’m sure will result nothing. I know quiet well our system. We separate the executive (government under presiden) and judicative (judicial power under supreme court). So in this case SBY couldn’t do anything except giving a pardon. You may say: blah I dont believe the system of 3rd world country. Ok, but this is serious. Now the development of knowledge about law and political system is running very fast in Indonesia, and people know very well the separation of power like this.
So IMHO the only things you can help her are:
1. to get pardon from our presiden. Presiden SBY surely will consider wisely this case. However, he couldn’t do anything or hardly do something if the political environment is more to unfavorable decision for Schapelle (so please don’t ever somebody do something stupid like sending the biological material or bullet to embassy, it can only make my people angry and worse decision for Schapelle). And also, she must confess guilty if she’d like to ask for pardon. Our law states that you must be a guilty person to be pardoned. If not, how could SBY give her pardon if she’s innocent?
2. Try to help her to get a reduction of her sentence. She’s surely not going to spend her life for 20 years in prison. Only stupid thinks that. She might get remission because of many factors, including good behaviour. You can consult with her lawyer about maximum remission she can get.
3. Make her life more comfortable there. I’m serious about this. In Indonesian jail, you mostly can bring anykind of foods for prisoners, they can also own a some stuffs that impossible to own it in Australian jail. So, I’m sure that your donation for her must be very useful.
4. To free her. Surely not by sending SAS there. the things you can help her:
a) Help her to provide evidences that she’s innocent. But honestly I’m pessimistic about this because many hard evidences have been destroyed.
b) Bring people who did it. I’m also pessimistic about this one. I’m sorry. But you must try.
You can copy my advices to Forum Schapelle. I love to write it myself there but well I don’t think I’d like to involve deeply with this concern. So feel free to copy it.
You may wonder why do I so care give you such advices?
1) I care for my country, and I see a bright future having good relationship with Australia. Not only economically but also cultural, science, etc. and dont want somebody ruins it with sending bactery or bullet, etc. And this way for me is much better than insulting each other. My apologize for my previous postings.
2) After thinking awhile, I’m sure you all have good heart for that you care for her passionately.
I salute you all,
parama/kunjaya.
ps. surely this is not my real name, but don’t bother.
Hello kunjaya .
You are quite right that this site is as good and up-to date as it ever gets.He does a great job, that english man in Bali.
Good on him .
Oh my God guys. This is turning into a love-fest. Well while were at it I would also like to point out that without my colleagues in Oregon this site would not happen at all. People like Barrie, Tracey, Mark Spark and all the great people who comment maek it what it is. I’m just the monkey who lives here.
Kunjaya, Thank you very much for your detailed reply. It is great to have Indonesians participating and we value your opinion.

Hi Kunjaya,
Glad to read an Indonesian post.I’d love to read more of your insights and points of view. The only Indonesian perspective I have seen were some really awful headlines about anthrax on CNN.I don’t want to know what the Indonesian journalists think , I’d like to read more about what the Balinese people really think about Australians.Honestly, without being diplomatic and polite. Not just what people are thinking but also what people are feeling.
What do Balinese think of Aussies?
do you really want him to answer that one?
hahahahh!
For Corby’s love life prospects please see:

Hi Annie,
But I can try my best:
Many Indonesian moslems are moderate, but there’s growing interest for many Indonesians to practice Islam stronger, I guess this is their way to bear misery of poverty (for the poor) and to find solutions for immoral cases such as corruption (for middle upper income). However, still Indonesia don’t want to be an Islamic country, that’s why we still a secular country till today. And still we like westerners
You can see it from many actors and actrese here that many of them half westerners half Indonesians. If you go to Jakarta, their young people daily habit is more americanized than young people in Europe continent.
Indonesia has 220 millions population that so much different in culture, local language, and we have at least 4 religions. So my opinion will hardly reflect those people opinions
Generally Indonesians like the westerners regardless where you’re from, except the extremists like Amrozi for sure. We like to make a friend with westerners. So we love you, Australians
Sorry I’m not a Balinese, I’m a Javanese, so I couldn’t give you any opinion about how they feel to Australians, maybe Nick et al who live in Bali can tell you more. But one thing for sure: by experience, I think in general Balinese people are the most honest people, if not in the world at least in Indonesia.
Hope this can answer your question a bit. salam.
Parama/Kunjaya,
You are one of the few sensible posters on this forum.
Believe me, the guys in the SAS themselves were probably laughing their collective arses off when some fools started suggesting a raid to free Corby. Just like a boycott - it ain’t gonna happen!
Despite all the screaming and whailing from a vocal minority of Australians. This is the best they could do for a protest rally. And this was in her own friggin state!
The writing is on the wall boys and girls.
Corby rally attracts few
15:56 AEST Fri Jun 3 2005
AAP
Only a handful of people have turned up for a rally to protest against the Schapelle Corby verdict.
The media contingent covering the event trebled the crowd of six people who attended the rally outside state parliament in Brisbane.
Rally organiser Guy Pilgrim of Brisbane, a friend of Corby, said he expected 300 people to join the protest.
Mr Pilgrim said the rally had been designed to pressure the Australian government to produce evidence in a bid to boost Corby’s appeal against her 20-year sentence for smuggling 4.1kg of cannabis into Bali airport on October 8 last year.
“I’m actually very disappointed because so many people are so passionate about this - well they make all those noises - but yet when it comes to actually doing something they go ‘No I’m too busy’,” Mr Pilgrim told reporters.
But fellow organiser Helen Hirst said the protest’s poor turn-out did not signal dwindling support for Corby.
Those who showed up, including Maureen and Trevor of Warner north of Brisbane, said a lack of promotion and poor organisation were probably to blame for the dismal attendance.
Ms Hirst said the protest was also meant to call for a prisoner transfer agreement to bring Corby back to Australia as well as cement Premier Peter Beattie’s support for any transfer.
Thanks Karl for the “sensible”.
I’m happy Corby didn’t live in Paris, it could be hundreds or thousands people gather for their beloved “manifestation”.
salam.

Stuey,
You’re very welcome to come and I’m sure you’ll have a very nice holiday in Bali (sounds like promotion, uh). Bali is my first fav. and then West Sumatra and Lake Toba. I’d like to go to Lake Tondano in North Sulawesi, which I never before, but haven’t had opportunity to do so. Just don’t go to conflict areas like Aceh, Poso, and Ambon, the rests are safe to visit, especially Bali
I think Corby got confused!

First, it was an airport worker who planted the drugs; now it’s Corby’s brother! Believers, raise your hands!! Ummmm…let’s see…nope, not a one, at least among those who count, such as the police, prosecutors, and judges who were involved in putting her away.
