Computer headaches in Seminyak Bali

My laptop has a bug that won't allow me to use half the keyboard. People are still calling me about their websites (2 today) even though I don't know how to fix my own machine. They say the definition of hell. is the impossibility of reason, but I'm not worried, this is Bali and reason you leave at the airport.

Today I went to Global Xtreme in Kerobokan to hand off my machine to their fixer. I then went to Sanur to check out internet cafes. One thing about Sanur is it gets a lot of short term visitors from Europe who want to check their email. Along Jl. Danau Tamblingan there are plenty of places, but they all charge 400rp per minute (24,000rp per hour) for somewhat average connection.

Back here in Kuta I am using one of the internet cafes I used to use all the time. They have a new operating system which basically blocks everything I'm trying to do. The most user unfriendly system I've encountered. Among the new additions, you can't use the right mouse button on half the things you want, no Ctrl N, you type in Google.com into the address box and get nothing (its MSN and has been rigged not to go to Google), photo viewer retarded, will not allow View Source, you can't change the homepage or get to Tools / Options. You start to wonder what's the point if the customer can't do anything apart from check email.

Nick – let’s get you a new laptop now. That thing is 3 years old now and been through the tropic ringer. And if you can’t do what you want at that cafe, don’t go. oh well.

I seriously doubt they have a new operating system (I have yet to see any non-windows system in an Indonesian internet cafe). They’ve probably just disabled a large number of commands in order to try and secure their MS systems from the large number of idiots who come in and screw with their machines. But it’s still very annoying. I still can’t understand why they simply don’t install Linux in the the cafes. Users can’t screw up the machines but they retain all the functionality. And it’s free and legal.

I’m hoping I can get my machine back soon. It has something to do with my profile affecting the keyboard.
