Cock fighting in Kuta Bali
Here in Kuta today I could feel the humidity building and knew rain was coming. Arriving in Kuta I visited Internet Outpost on Poppies II. Walking through to Poppies I passed a large group of men who were getting very excited. It was the start of a cock fight.
I climbed onto the benches at the back of the small arena and looked over people’s shoulders. Two fighting cocks were released, one white and one black / red. The white one attacked forcing his opponent out of the arena temporarily. Opon his return the darker rooster was attacked with claws brandishing razors and fell face first into the dirt….the fight was over.
It was exciting and fast and by the time my camera was out it was all over. Many bets had been placed and money changed hands once the judge had declared a winner.
The proud winner was shown to the remaining spectators while the damged loser was quickly killed and bagged for his trip home. Its a short and exciting life being a fighting cock. One minute glory, the next a sack. The loser was de-razored and packed for shipment.
This area was out back of food area and is a regular event. Straight after the cock fighting was a gambling session involving a large mat with shapes on and a ball that was spun on a board with corresponding shapes. I took plenty of photos but disc error mean’t they were all lost.
There’s another cock fight tommorrow at 1pm if anyone is in the area.
I visited a local vendor of clothing and snapped her daughter Iloo.

Mary was right - Iloo is a cutie. Nick you seem to get some really natural shots and they are great to see. You definitely have to be quick with the camera at a cockfight. I saw one in Semarang during the Soeharto era and at that time it was illegal. I think I managed to get 2 fotos and it was all over. I was astounded at the amount of money wagered and the unfortunate loser was the following night’s dinner!.

I would hope people within this community would feel that finding pleasure at the expence of another shows a weakness in our ability to be human. I am working on those traits I have learned which I had never learned. I feel by using insults and telling people they are wrong, has proved over time ends in more chicken fights. Kill with kindness, teach and explain why if we all wish to feel good in life there are better ways of finding it that know person could ever say its wrong. I wish I were a better writer, but I,m working on it. Dont spend your time on what someone else is doing wrong,try what their doing write. Doing the right thing the wrong way, will never be right. I’m tired of being mad It gives people power over me and I will always be I’ts slave.I’m working for the day we are all humans and forget the words that limit the great power we have.
