Christmas carols at Starbucks Bali

Riding down Jl. Legian in Kuta today it started to pour. I didn’t have my rain jacket on and was getting drenched. Starbuck Jl. Legian was right there, so I pulled over and ran inside. Ordering a coffee of the day for 17,500rp and a copy of The Economist from the rack, I sat at the back in a comfortable chair waiting for the rain to let up. No sooner than I got into an article, all hell broke loose.

Out of nowhere, 20 Indonesian school kids marched in and formed 2 lines, a meter from where I was sitting. They were followed by a guy with a portable keyboard and another with speakers. Two minutes later everyone was singing Christmas carols, and performing motions. A truly bizarre moment. These kids seemed totally into it and belted out the songs, part in English, part in Indonesian.

They did the usual collection at the end and went around shaking everyone’s hand. I later learned they were orphans. After 15 minutes they were out and off to their next gig.

Politcal correctness wouldn’t allow that to happen in a western country. Strange world.
