I spent the first half of today checking out the nooks and crannies fo Poppies I in Kuta for accommodation.
I think that the only way to really learn about a hotel of guest house is to go there yourself, preferably staying there too.
Poppies Lane I isn’t itself a very attractive street. Its narow, concrete on 3 sides and can feel like ‘third world hell’ at times. The surprising thing is that there are quality restaurants and a selection of okay guest house there.
The cheapest places I saw today were Mahendra and Puri Agung on the little street that connects Poppies I & II. They charged 25,000rp for one person a night. The most expensive and by far the nicest place was Poppies Cottages close to TJ’s Mexican restaurant who had lovely cottages and with traditional roofs and garden. They charged $80 per night for 1 person.
My advice to newcomers is check out at least 2 places as the quality can vary and sometimes the better places actually cost less.

The Chairman and owner of API, Mr. Kadek Wiranatha, has announced the acquisition of an Airbus A300-600 aircraft in a 277 all-economy configuration from one of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies, Ansett Worldwide Leasing. The aircraft, to be maintained under the existing contract with Singapore Airlines Engineering Company (SIAEC), will become operational on August 19, 2003.
New Sydney – Bali Service
Effective September 1, 2003, API will commence direct flights between Sydney and Bali on Mondays and Fridays and via Melbourne on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Mr. Wiranatha, commenting on the addition of Sydney to API’s list of destinations, said, “We could hardly say we serve Australia without including Sydney, the country’s largest city and historically one that has always had one of the strongest links with Bali. I am so pleased that we can now offer our service to Sydneysiders.”
Extra Flights to Melbourne
API have announced an extra two services from Melbourne. The airline will be flying direct from Melbourne to Bali on Wednesdays and Saturdays and via Sydney on Mondays and Fridays.
