Cat & Fiddle music night in Sanur Bali
Tuesday afternoon Vincent and Akari swung by on a lightning visit to civilization and invited me to join them for dinner and music at the Cat & Fiddle pub in Sanur later.
Andrea was out exploring and when she arrived back at 7.30pm she told me the bank had rescued her card…hooray for BCA!!! She had gone to the office after closing and somehow found somebody to let her in and make contact with a staff member who knew where the card was. I was relieved for her.
Riding down to Sanur was quick on the Bypass though it took me a while to find the Cat & Fiddle again, I haven’t been back there since last year. When I arrived around 8pm there were about 5 tables of people eating and drinking. The owner and British Consul Mark Wilson was on hand, I said hello but I’m sure he didn’t remember me, so many expats want his time I’m sure he’s super busy.
I sat at the bar and sipped an Anker Stout for 12,000rp. The waitress Komang remembered me but not my name. The staff at the Cat & Fiddle are friendly and seem to have a good time. Mark is a no nonsense guy and I can tell is fair to people.
Vincent and Akari arrived and we got situated at a center table, Akari ordering a bottle of white wine, Vincent a large Bintang and me a small Guinness stout for 12,000rp. I knew what I was having for dinner even before I arrived…Irish bangers and mash (sausages and potato with tomatoes, mushrooms and gravy). This meal was 38,000rp and was good and filling. The reason for the Irish items on the menu is that Mark’s granny Duffy was Irish.
The musicians included Mark’s twin brother on acoustic guitar, an accordion player, a fellow on violin and Komang the waitress on tambourine. Italian Consul Guisseppe Pino Confesa injected some Italian culture in the second part of the gig. I hope he didn’t hear me shout ‘know an Gypsy Kings?’ This gathering occurs everyweek after 8pm and is a fun and informal scene. People seem to arrive and join in and I’m sure they wouldn’t mind an extra.
This was relatively quiet night and there was maybe 10 tables of people, plenty of elbow room for newcomers.
Vincent and Akari had arranged for their driver to swing by with the SUV at 11pm and drive them back to Tirtagangga. I told them anytime I don’t have other guests they are welcome to stay at my place.
I got home shortly after and enjoyed the clear evening, plenty of stars in the sky.

yeah Nick you sure found the best irish pub in bali.next time try the guinness pie. mind boggling.Mark and his twin brother Phil also are on the committee of bali hash harriers.a group of people who run through the beautiful parts of bali on saturday afternoons.a great time is had by all. Mark and Phill were also awarded the OBE for their work assisting people after the bali bomb.
Thanks fellas. The Cat $ Fiddle is a cool place and I recommend it. Mark and Phil look very similar and were both wearing blue and white check shirts the night.
Don’t you think Vincent would make a good British Consul somewhere.
You should see him ordering the staff around…”no Wayan put the tray over there and serve us from the smaller table.” Its funny and I think Vincent would of made a great Governor of Hong Kong or Viceroy of India about 100 years ago.
Let’s get the Empire back and put the boy to work.
Hell yes. I’d almost forgotten about the Cat and fiddle!! If you fancy a surreal night, do an irish night there. Its a great laugh. The food is good, the staff friendly and Im forced to say amazingly cute, and the whole atmosphere is chilled. Sad that its so far across the town and hidden away.
