This morning Vincent, Akari and I went to Tebu for breakfast.
They asked for a change from the usual Café Moka and Vincent wanted to watch the waves crashing without the cost of Ku De Ta. I couldn’t think of anywhere off hand but do know Tebu does decent food, close to the beach but not with a view. It located close to Pura Petitenget.
My breakfast was a scrambled egg thing on muffin with tomato, potatoes and bread, carrot juice, Bali coffee for 20,000rp. It’s a chill little joint and although its usually empty when I come I suspect it will get very popular over the coming year the way Warung Gossip has.
Vincent and Akari are heading over to Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia for their next visa run. We talked about the pitfalls of committing to Bali long term, buying land etc. I said I’d rather not sink any money into Bali personally ( famous last words ) but would prefer to buy property in Australia or the US. Their problem right now is they want to be in Karangasem in east Bali but there is just not a supply of high quality homes for rent like there is in the southern part of the island. If they can’t buy someone else’s place they pretty much have to build their own.
My house hunting activities today included visiting Panorama Cottages in Kuta. There are 2 sites which are on the loop at the bottom of Jl. Legian close to the bungy tower. I know a couple of guys who have lived there for a while and know they lease long term. I looked at a couple of rooms on offer which amount to a guest house type situation. Don’t know right now if this is what I want but it is cheaper and downtown.
You may be wondering if I am looking for a place to live with my budget where are the people from Java and other parts of Bali living. The answer is they live in a ‘kost’ which is one tiny room in a compound that has been divided up. These places are all over, just go down any of the alleys off of Jl Legian and you will see small ‘gangs’ with ‘terima kost’ signs. I’ve visited several friends who live in a kost and they usually double up, one person on the single bed, the other person on a mattress on the floor. You can get a kost for $25 per month. Rooms are 10 ft square with shared bathroom, no fan, no AC.
Its exciting. My life in Bali will have a new situation in a few weeks from now.

I want that Ku De Ta french toast thing, with bananas and bacon again, just right for breakfast.
Hope Vincent and Akari are enjoying life in Ubud.
Nick
I lived at Panorama II for 3 years and enjoyed it. Only had 1 theft in that time. Good points: location, doesn’t flood, parking available inside compound, electricity, maids, gardeners, pool included in rent, can bargain the cost and there is someone at reception day and night, water pressure is good and there are long term expats living there, all looking out for each other. Any renovations or maintenance was fixed really quickly.
I had the bungalow down next to the pond.
Bad points: had to buy own fridge, cooker/gas bottle, cutlery, tv and stuff, no aircon but had fan in bedroom and spent about 3 mill doing it up to my standard, which by the way the bosses son is now enjoying!
If you go for the rooms as you come into the front gate, you will need aircon, they are like sauna’s. Depends on how much money, if any, you want to spend setting yourself up.
Hop on your bike and explore the back gangs behind the old Matahari, also down and around Jl Benesari and the Tuban area. Best to just poke around and ask. Stear clear of agents as they all want a slice of the ole commission. Also alot of people sublet and this pushes the cost up too!
What about Denpasar? No, not renon, its $$$$, but rule of thumb, less Tourists, less rent.
Get on the ole Sepeda Motor and start investigating!
Hi Chris
Ubud is cool (apart from the odd case of house break in and computer theft).
Yes, we all miss that Ku De Ta breakfast thing!
Reading Nick’s report makes me sound a bit like a whingeing Pom and is probably due to me being grumpy. Leicester inexplicably lost 4-Nil to Chelsea as witnessed by Nick, Akari & I are the Sports café in Kuta the previous night.
There are worse deals in life than to be in Bali and not able to find the house you want where you want.
Good luck on your house hunting Nick
Jen, spewing we never got offered your old room….
But I also left all the WESTERN bit’s & pieces I ever bought during the longer stays in Bali, for someone else to enjoy or sell!!!!
I have also seen some really nice bungalows in a group of about 6-10 behind McDonalds on Jln Legian, not sure of prices, but a few had A/C & there were large gardens around each bungalow so really private, plus as you say someone on the front gate/reception 24/7! These were 2 & 3 bedroom places, really central. But I agree to look dopwn the most nookiest & cranniest of allewy ways opens up a hole new kettle of fish! You should check out Krakatoa as they have places for rent, buying etc directly thru owners that might save you more money, plus in Seminyak it’s expat city, gotta be more expensive!
I stay a Panorama Cottages 2 every time I go to Bali, usually for 3 weeks or so. I’ve stayed in all different sizes and standards there, from the one bedders with no toilet seats, to two bedroom villas, and some in between. Planning on spening a couple of months there this year too, and getting the el cheapo rooms that are a block of four in the middle and close to the pool. Can anyone tell me how much I should be paying there, it’ll be for one month, and then another month or two later in the year?
Mary, Sorry it was 3 years ago when we stayed there, we had a 2 bedroom place, My hubby organised it through a friend, it was perfect for us, I cannot even remember how much he paid… I’d say just barter until your happy with the price, if not there are many of other great places to stay, so your options are open!!!
Yeah - thanks anyway Tracey. I just love staying there. It’s the perfect place for me, especially as many of my friends live across the road, and there’s the supermarket. I’m sure I’ll get a decent price, they remember now, so I should be fine
Make sure when you ask for the price to tell them you’ll be back in a few months again to stay & will regularly stay there each time your in Bali, if possible giving them dates of when you plan to return etc, they might give you a discount if you return, so maybe not this time but next they can say yes you promised & here you are, then give you a special price????
GOOD LUCK, it is a great location!
Nick,
Quick question why don’t other recent comments come up on the right? I happened to look at something & found questions asked early Jan that perhpas could have been answered earlier had any of us noticed them… Or is it just me!? Oh my goodness you’ve banished me haven’t you!!!
No, just kidding but I found out by just clicking here there & everyehere, I think it was under accom…. Just thought we could reply or offer advice if we knew they were there…
CHEERS!!!!
Hi, we are coming over to Bali in February, around the 10th. I have been told that it is the rainy season, I have been before but not that time of the year, what is a typical day like in the “rainy season”?
Thanks Ame
Tracey,
We did some re arrangement of how the site looked and the recent comments were the thing that went. We want to promote the guide section more nad now of course we have the message board section where you can start your own Bali topic, not just reply to one I started…power to the people!
Amelia,
The rainy season usually means morning and evening showers. Right now its the rainy season but we’ve had blazing sunshine all day. Seriously I think you’ll have a great time plus all the hills will be lush and green.
Nick, I have lived for 8 months in “KOST” style, it’s quite fun & interesting…
You get to meet heaps of local people & often get invited to many village things. I bought myself a fan & fridge often someone from one of the rooms (I think there were 17 rooms in total) would see who wanted what & one person would go shopping for everyone. We had massive parties, we would have a big cook up weekly of seafood etc. It was really cool, but I must say I only paid about $120 (AUS) for 12 months!!! But this was about 7 years or so ago. For someone planning to stay for a longer time on a tight Budget I’d certainly recommend it, or even for someone wanting to do something different etc!!!
Also stayed for 60 days at Panorama Cottages (2) once. The pool is lovely there, but a friend was staying in one of the newer rooms & borrowed my video camera & old camera for a day trip to a Cremation, when she returned Maddison, Gede & I were asleep, so she put it all in her room & went to ghet food, upon her return a heap of stuff was stolen! Including my video camera with Maddison’s 2nd birthday party on it!!! I was disappointed, but what can you do???
If you chose Panorama take one of the rooms backing on to the main road along Peanut’s not the otherside that backs onto an alley way!!!
You should check out the notice board at Krakatoa, you might find something direct from owner, or check out the Bali Advertiser….?
Might be something there!!!!
GOOD LUCK!!!
