Bemo Corner, Kuta Bali

Weather was slightly overcast today and I took an early morning stroll on the beach in Seminyak for a phone call with Sean in Oregon. The waves were quite impressive, I get the feeling good surfing is around the corner.

In Kuta I walked down to Jalan Raya Kuta past Bemo Corner, the place where the little blue buses park. I took these things 10 years ago all over the island and they are a pain in the ass. I promised myself I’d never use them again. Sure you can pick up a ride without advance booking but the driver will try to charge you several times the going rate. I’m sure times have changes due to the bombing and decreased tourism but avoid these things if you can. The great thing about renting a bike is you can stop where you want and don’t have to deal with B.S.

The experience with a bemo is worth maybe one ride, that is getting packed in with about a dozen or more locals, some maybe on your lap if the driver is packing them in.

Along lower Jl. Legian restaurants and carving shops abound with some interesting designs.

Back on Poppies II the ladies at Gelati ice cream patiently wait for business.

Barrie,

Never got to the Durian ice cream but friend did buy me one a few weeks ago. I remember smeeling something like rotten garbage and saying I had to takeo ut the trash because the wholev house stank. It was the Durian on the counter. I tried some of it but chucked it next morning. I’d try it again, I just don’t want top live with it.

Here’s an interesting link.

http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~durian/

Mick Turnbull, motorcycle daredevil and Cathay Pacific engineer told me Durian is the only fruit banned on carry on luggage…the smell is so strong it sets off the smoke detectors, no joke.

I remember what you said, the place next to 96.

The ladies at Gelati are always asking me if I want free samples but I’m just not that into ice cream. Too bad they don’t work at a brewery.

G’day Nick,

Actually Durian fruit reminded me of ‘a toilet that has never been flushed for months!’. I will check out that site later. Thanks.

Talking about breweries, I’ll be bringing you over a few of the local brews and, a familiar one to you - a Boddies from Strangeways!.

Not sure if I missed something - but what is Durian?

Sean,

Durian is a large spiky fruit (bit like a spiked mace!) that is a delicacy throughout the archipelago. When you slice it in half, there are whitish pockets inside and this is the edible flesh. To put it briefly, it stinks like shit!. However, once you can manage to get it into your mouth (without throwing up or passing out!), it has a sort of caramel flavour. Well, that’s what it tasted like to me!.
