A recent Bali Times interview with Mr. John M Daniels, Bali travel expert, President Director of balidiscovery.com and Editor of Bali Update, reveals some enlightened opinions. Mr. Daniels has lived in Bali for almost 20 years and received awards from the Indonesian government for his services to the tourism industry.
I will comment on 3 of the questions:
How is Bali perceived overseas? He talks about Bali having a Brand equity. The image of Bali, which started from way back in the 1920s when Europeans first saw photographs of bare-breasted Balinese women and labeled Bali a paradise, still continue. The culture, the ceremonies and the people have created an enduring image that we in the tourist industry are lucky to have on our side.
Will the recent drug arrests having any impact on Bali tourism? Mr. Daniels says that any fallout will probably of a short duration. I agree with that. As the emotional steam runs out and people have a chance to digest the facts, listen to argument their rational minds will tell them Bali is still a great place to visit. The drug problems were all caused by people from overseas engaging in illegal activities. The laws here in Bali are Indonesian laws. Bali is as much of a victim as anyone involved.
How do you see Bali developing in the next few years? He says unplanned development and the growing ownership of land by non-Balinese, is a problem. My take on this is Bali should implement strict zoning laws for the whole island. A big problem in my eyes in the locals themselves, who build nasty cement walls across the rice fields, continues ribbon development any chance they get and construct ugly structures in postcard land.
I think Mr. Daniels has some good insights and I found his comments interesting and accurate.

Jack Daniels will one day (soon) go to jail, that’s a promise. I can and do (on my advisory web site) show how he colludes with corrupt? Police officers in Bali, commits acts of perjury, subversion, falsifying evidence and criminal libel.
John Millard Daniels went to war (in his nasty Bali Update spam email campaign) against Corby and, in effect, Australians. Corby may be guilty, but does that mean she is? Does she not deserve a proper / professionally held investigation and a fair trial? The police handled the evidence and destroyed all hope of the truth. The judge told her defense team (pah - ask me about what the Lubis sisters know regarding criminal law and how they duplicity work!) that they had not proved her innocence - Well, forgive me, but isn’t she meant to be innocent until proven guilty? Shame on Balinese justice (what a frequent “song”), shame on the man who subdues his conscience with copious amounts of the liquor he has named himself after.
Daniels is nothing but a travel agent, nothing more, but I contend a lot less. He is not a travel expert. Ask the person who sat in front of him on his flight back from the Bali Tourism thing in Melbourne. Remember her Jack ![]()

Thank you Mark for your comments. I would say though Mr Daniels does seems to be an expert in the tourism industry and he regularly publishes industry news.
I don’t know about ‘going to war against Corby’.
I agree with you that the Bali police were unprofessioanal in their handling of evidence. It was that evidence however that took Corby from being innocent to guilty. She even acknowledges there was a huge bag of marijauna inside her board bag.
If you or I landed at LAX, LHR or any other airport in the world with 4.1kgs of weed and no explainantion for how it got there, we would be ofund guilty too.
Actually;
1) She did have an explanation, it must have been planted.
2) The handling of the evidence meant this explanation could not be fairly assessed.
3) No sir, you would not be found guilty in the UK or EU, nor Aus, the USA or NZ I am sure. There are rules about evidence illegally gained or compromised. It would be ruled inadmissible. No bag of dope, no case, period.
4) Jack Daniels only reads newspapers and rewrites articles for his “Bali Update”, nothing more. In point of fact, Daniels promised the industry when he started his Bali Update that it would be for the industry, but it is simply a soap box for a former mortuary assistant’s views (that was his job before) and a series of advertisements for his travel agency. Which, it would appear, he only started because he lost his job with Spice Island Cruises (hardly the “cruise industry” he says he was in, as they were pretty small craft) when they went bust. BTW they closed down as the Indonesian Customs demanded they pay tax, which you would expect as they only cruised Indonesian waters yet tried to claim they were a foreign business not subject to Indonesian law. Which also almost certainly means Jack was working illegally in Indonesia, as he would not have been able to get a work permit to work within Indonesia from a non-Indonesian company right? So this all makes him a travel expert? I don’t think so. He is just a travel agent. And like most travel agents, they may sell travel, but know nothing about what they are selling.
5) Going to war referred to his soapbox (Bali Update) comments that Australians should stop whining about Corby. BTW, Daniels mother came from Australia, so I think he should folow his own advice and stop whining about Corby ![]()
Since Mr. Daniels is from the travel industry AND a resident of Indonesia, how could he possibly sing any other tune about the effect of the Corby verdict on future tourist numbers?
Interesting that having been in Bali for 20 years, he now thinks that the non-Balinese land owners are a problem. Pot calling the kettle black?
BTW, what is this - a mutual back-scratching club of Nick and John?
