Bali slowly coming back from the tourism slump

Bali is quiet now, no doubt about that. The thing is the weather is awesome, there are new restaurant and lounge bars all over the place (Buddha’s Belly, D’Glow etc.) and new villas. I’m no math expert but BaliDiscovery have a handle on the stats, which show a modest increase in tourist traffic.

It is true that pure numbers don’t show everything, for example some Asia visitors stay only a few days and spend very little. But one thing that counter-balances that, is the fact that the whole Bali tourism scene is going upmarket. Twenty years ago it was all losmen (guest houses), warungs, banana pancakes and bamboo bars. Not anymore. Now we have an ever increasing line up of places like Ku De Ta, De Ja Vu, Fuel, EmBarGo, Double Six.

The accommodation market is going towards private villas and some large hotels have private villas on their property. Just round the corner from me is a villa that rented for $2,500 a month, including AC bedrooms, huge lounge, big swimming pool, chef, driver, maid. For some people that is a bargain, considering you can bring your family and have a great private place, fully equipped.

I look forward to seeing Bali back to full strength.

hallo Nick, i like what you write, i read it almost every day when im at work. This subject is kind of sad, the balinese people depends on tourism,if they loose it, they loose an important income.
are you sure you mean one month, 2500$.that sounds cheap. can you tell me the name of the place, and number. im planning to go to bali next xmas( i will also be there 18 june-18aug) and that place sounded perfect fo me and my family.

Trish I can’t remember. I went there with some American tourists a while ago. Its really close to Dhyana Pura. Maybe it was less than a month b ut I thought they said a month.

There are villas down Jl. Drupadi, I have seen a very nice one with pool, garden and 3 bedrooms AC for $150 per day, probably less for a month.

The decline in Bali Tourism started before the firt Bali Bombing. In 1997 a tourist could walk along Kuta Beach and sit and relax at a beach bar and mix with the locals. This had the effect of blending the different mix of cultures, and it also helped the Sellers and Massage, Manequre Ladies because the Tourist’s were relaxed havin a drink. NOW the Bars are gone and most tourists try to avoid the multitude of Sellers like a mosquito attack. Reality tells me that this beautifull Paradise Island has lost it’s charm and local culture to the forced evacuation of the sellers, Bars and now Tourists from the Beach. What other Beach in the World CLOSES at sunset, well effectively Kuta,Legian.Semintak does and thats bad planning not bombing.
