The trial of the Bali nine is expected to begin shortly with prosecutors seeking the death penalty for each of the accused. The Bali Nine were arrested some months ago, with 4 of them attempting to leave Bali with 8kgs of heroin strapped to their bodies. Other members of the group were captured with heroin in a downtown hotel, while another member, Andrew Chan, was captured sitting on a plane about to leave for Australia.
Indonesia has extremely strict rules concerning drug possession and drug trafficking. The soap opera material in this trial is the fact that the various groups will probably telling a different story in court, the 4 mules claiming they were intimidated by the ring leaders, the ring leaders claiming they had nothing to do with it and everyone else scrambling for some kind of lesser charge. This won't wash with the prosecutors though and a recent newspaper article says the police have done their homework tracking phone records proving a web of communication existed.
Likely outcome: Everyone convicted of conspiracy to traffic narcotics. Death sentence commuted to life. Australian government arranges prisoner transfer to get them home.
