Bali Nine drug mule Scott Rush, was told today he would escape the death penalty if found guilty of trafficking drugs.
The Denpasar District court informed him that prosecutors are seeking a life-sentence. This decision will mean the other 3 ‘mules’ and probably some others too, will also escape death. The 2 kingpins, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran will probably get the death sentence, but in Indonesia the appeals process can take years.
You’ve got to think this decision will make the families of some of the Bali Nine sleep easier tonight. Getting them out of prison in the long term will be a war of attrition. Talking with an foreigner at the jail the other day, we discussed what we’d do if the Bali Nine were our kids. Would we pay someone a couple of hundred thousand for a ‘solution’ or just sit and wait and hope the Aussie government can do something? I said I’d give my last penny to get my kid out, even if it meant bankrupcy, but of course its an easy thing to say when your not in that position.
The guilty verdicts will be delivered next month along with the sentencing.

At the Kerobokan Hotel, a 20 year sentence is the same as a life sentence.
Just a question, over here it’s being reported that it’s life or a minimum of 20yrs without remission. Is that the case?
If OZ is against the death penalty, then why did they railroad these people,in Bali, seems the police have to protect their citizens, and let the courts in OZ DEAL WITH THEM. I DONT THINK I WILL BE VISITING oz, bali or hong kong. CANADA IS A MUCH BETTER AND FAIRER COUNTRY.
Keelty said he would do the same again. i guess he would,Lepoards dont change their spots.
Hope he does. Better they die in a foreign land than kill people in this country
ok i just watched scott rush’s australian story and i was just wondering how long is a life sentence in bali … cos like in australia its like 40 years or something like that???
SEBASTIAN .YOUR VIEWS OF KILLING DRUG MULES IS OUT TO LUNCH how can you say drug mules kill people! if there was no drug users or demand they would put the drug mules out of business..that is like saying people who sell gasolene should be proscuted, because kids put it in a plastic bag and inhale the fumes.and it kills young people in the north of canada.
shooting young people, tied to a post, should be a crime against humanity, and the men and women who take part in this, should consider they are living in my world, and should not make it worse than it already is.Perhaps they will wake up and see a bigger picture,of what they are involved in
Yeh sandstoney, better you stay home.
For the record I don’t give two shits about junkies. It is the victims of the junkies and the families the drugs rip apart I’m talkin about. They are not just innocent young tourists who were tricked, railroaded and/or threatened to try to smuggle heroin back to my country. They are guilty criminals. They knew the law. The whole of Australia knew the law in Indonesia regarding drug trafficking because Corby’s case had only just finished and she had copped her 20 years.
It is their country and it is their law and if you don’t respect it and you think you can get around it and you are caught then you should just accept it and move on. That is the price you pay. And sandstoney, don’t your neighbours to the south kill people too? hmmm.Do you kick up your heels then too?
I think that Scott Rush shouldn’t be charged with life in prson
we should respect all the law in every country. And I think with these IDIOTS (RED- Bali 9) deserved those lengthy sentence. They not stupid, they know what they doin’. But maybe they to smart so they got trap inside those junky brains and green dollars (if they success bring those powder to OZ). Same as SC (Schapelle Corby) She know the drug planted inside her boogy bag, but because whe’s white and female and try to shuffle those air bag size booobies infront of cameras, she pretend she’s innocent. The whole family are drug dealers, and why she couldn’t be 1 of them?? well well, its because she think she can bribe the authorities..which I happily say this to her ‘TOUGH LUCKKK GIRLFRIENDDD’. Well with the punishment they received it’s fairly good enough for them to learn. They don’t just damage the image of bali, but also put all the Balinesse people into shame that the whole world think Bali is place to get trippin’ and dealing drugs. Thats all my comment, and by the way, I’m a white person so don’t mistaken me with the black people. Peace….
Scott rush wasn’t charged with life imprison..he was charged with trafficking drugs…the penalty he will pay is life imprisonment. Hopefully that will be a lesson to others who think they can get away with it..hefty penalty. But justified.
