Bali Nine circus unfolds in Denpasar Bali

Like TV channels competing for ratings, young Australian drug traffickers are back on centerstage in Bali. Michelle Leslie is back home and onto to the money trail, meanwhile the Bali Nine are on trial in Denpasar.

Monday saw 2 of the ‘mules’, drug carriers Scott Rush (19) and Michael Czujag (18) offer some defence to the 3 judges in Denpasar. I remember attending the sentencing of Schapelle Corby and how the courtroom seemed like something out of Mississippi, with locals hanging from the rafters, people sitting in the windows, trying to get a glimpse of the action.

Your head is on the block, your ass is in a sling. What do you do? A stranger offers you a free holiday to Bali plus a wallet full of money to be his friend. You go for it and suddenly things turn heavy, with people telling you to carry drugs or they’ll shoot you. So go through with it and get caught. That is the line these 2 young guys are trying to sell. The fact they they tried to ship heroin out of Bali makes me believe they are stupid enough to do that. Whether the judges will buy it is not known, but I’ve got to think at some point, stupidity is not an excuse. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse either.

Shooting a few scenes from the Denpasar court room will be on my list when I get back to Bali in December. Maybe a prison interview will be on the cards too.
