Bali hotel puzzle

Here is a brain teaser for all those coming to Bali and like to negotiate with hotel managers.

Three fellows on a roadtrip around the coast of Bali, stop in after sunset to a lovely boutique hotel in Karangasem. At the desk they ask the manager how much the rooms are. He tells them they are $30 per night, but there is only 1 room left and it has 2 twin beds, 1 guy will have to sleep in the tiny spare bed that can be added.

Each guy hands over $10 and they head for the room. After a few minutes the manager feels bad and taking 5 $1 bills from his wallet, he hands the money to the pembantu tells her to give the guys $5 back.

The pembantu knocks on the door of the room and give $3 back, keeping the other $2 for herself. But now there is a problem, maybe I have had 1 too many araks, but the way I see it things don't add up. The guys each handed in $10 making a total of $30. Each guy got $1 back, meaning they each paid $9. After doing some math, 3*$9=$27, the pembantu has $2 ($27+$2=$29). Where is the other dollar?

This is a bit of a brain twister.

What’s going on down there? Tell us you’re safe.

I can’t believe this is happening all over again. I’m overflowing with rage.

I’m in Kuta now. Its 10.57pm and things are relaxed. I just passed Kuta Square which has been blocked off. Seems like not to much damage.

It is really sad that there are people who kill innocent people in the name of Islam.

Sounded worrying though

Nick –
I am a reporter for a British newspaper and am trying to get more information about the bombs for people who have friends and relatives in Bali.
Were you nearby when the explosions happened?
Could you give any more details of what the situation is like now and how much damage there is?
Thanks

Hi Nick, we just heard it on CNN that once again terror has shadowed paradise. Of course we immediately thought of you and your family’s well being.
It’s a relief to hear you’re safe, cause the news are still quite scars… they only say there was a bomb in a restaurant next to Matahari (we actually know a Timorese – Mr. Parreira – that owns the shop next to it… hope he’s alright) and they’re pretty sure a bomb also went of in Jimbaran.
The news also talks about unconfirmed blasts, in total making it 4 or 5 bombs. Well I just hope the number of 2 dead people doesn’t rise, cause CNN is already talking 9 dead.
Keep us informed on the good news if you have some, cause the bad ones seem to fly in a rush.

May….
I’ve had the same 2nd thoughts. I’m supposed to arrive on Monday the 3rd. At first, I thought ‘I’m going anyway’. But as the death toll rises, I’m having 2nd thoughts. What are you thinking?

Thanks May & scottycol for your answers. I think I’m going – I’m staying near Sanur Beach and plan to stay away from Kuta!

For those of you in Bali, do you think Ulu Watu is safe to visit? It’s near Jimbaran, right?

Hope everyone’s friends/families are safe!

We all have our own opinions about Bush, Blair, and Howard. Personally, I dislike Bush for many reasons, not just Iraq. That said, I’m definitely glad I’m not booked on an American airline or hotel. Also staying away from anything that ‘looks’ American! Guess I’ll have to wear a hat and dark sunglasses, ha ha!

3m or so Hindu Balinese people form just a little over 1% of the indonesian population.

Eventhough this event will surely impact the tourism industry and bring harships to the people of Bali. The rest of indonesia will probably not give a damn as they are more concern with supporting their long suffering Palestinians, Iraqis, and Afgans brothers.

It is a fact that a great many people in indonesia think of themselves as more middle eastern than Asian.
