A recent survey of Indonesian cities revealed which were the cleanest and dirtiest. Needless to say some of the places in the developing world are ecological nightmares, with awful air pollution, water course pollution and toxic waste being dumped in food growing areas.
Anyone who has flown into Jakarta will remember the brown haze that sits over the city, much like Los Angeles. Someone told me that its impossible to get sunburnt in Jakarta because of the pollution layer.
The 3 dirtiest cities in Indonesia were Depok and Tangerang in Java and Palembang in South Sumatra. Two Balinese cities (or shall we say large towns) Tabanan and Bangli made the top 8 list of cleanest cities. I think Amlapura is a clean place too. Of course everything is relative, if you walk down the street in San Francisco you will see extremely high
grade footpath. But still, its good to see somebody in Indonesia monitoring the state of the cities and good to see that Denpasar was not on the dirty list.
